RedHawks Fall to Bobcats in Final Home Game, 12-7

OXFORD, Ohio - In the final game of the last home series of the season, Miami University's baseball team dropped a 12-7 decision to the Ohio University Bobcats on Sunday afternoon at McKie Field at Hayden Park. Miami drops to 26-21 overall and 14-10 in Mid-American Conference action, while Ohio improves to 25-21 overall and 15-9 in the MAC.
Robert Maddox III hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Brandon Besl to give Ohio a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Miami retaliated in the bottom of the inning when sophomore shortstop Brad Gschwind singled to left field, plating sophomore catcher Adam Weisenburger. An attempt at a pick off to first base was off the mark and allowed Gschwind to cross home to hand the RedHawks a 2-1 lead.
Ohio rattled off six runs in the top of the third inning, which included a two-run homer by Besl and a three-run shot by Maddox, to take commanding 7-2 lead. The Bobcats extended their lead to 8-2 in the top of the fifth inning when a sacrifice fly allowed Marc Krauss to cross home.
Miami made up some ground in the bottom of the fifth. Senior left fielder Chris Nadeau hit a single that plated sophomore right fielder Adam Eaton. A two-run homer over the left-field fence by senior first baseman Tommy Nurre that also scored Nadeau put the RedHawks within three runs, 8-5.
The RedHawks shrunk the gap to one run in the bottom of the sixth inning, 8-7, as Weisenburger scored on a groundout and Gschwind scored on a senior centerfielder Ben Eubank bunt single.
In the top of the seventh inning, Ohio upped its lead to two off a Krauss home run to right centerfield to put the score at 9-7 in favor of the Bobcats. Jerod Yakubik drilled a three-run homer in the top of the ninth to further the Bobcat lead to 12-7, which would end up being the final margin.
Nurre paced the RedHawks, going 3-for-5 with one run and two RBI, while three others had two hits each. Freshman Jordan Jankowski had the loss on the mound for the RedHawks, dropping to 5-2.
Three Bobcats tallied three hits apiece, led by Maddox and Besl who each went 3-for-4. Maddox had four RBI and one run, while Besl had two RBI and three runs on the day. Kevin Mementowski picked up the win on the mound, throwing 4.0 innings to move to 3-1 on the season, and Adam Goodpasture earned his second save.
Miami travels to Marshall for a 3 p.m. game on Tuesday, May 12 before closing out the regular season at Kent State May 14-16.
Notes: With a hit in the first inning, senior third baseman Jordan Petraitis extended his hitting streak to 15 consecutive games ... prior to the game, Miami honored its six seniors--Ben Eubank, Jordan Petraitis, Tommy Nurre, Matt Erwood, Chris Nadeau and Eric Darlage--playing in their final game at McKie Field at Hayden Park.
