BOWLING GREEN, Ohio--Senior forward Tim Pollitz scored 15 points and had nine rebounds, while sophomore guard Alex Moosmann added 11 points and junior guard Kenny Hayes chipped in 10, but the Miami University men's basketball team was edged by Bowling Green on Wednesday evening in Anderson Arena, 55-52.
Miami dropped to 7-10 on the season and 1-4 in Mid-American Conference play, while the Falcons moved to 8-9 overall and 3-2 in league action.
Bowling Green scored the first bucket of the game, but Miami rattled off 10 unanswered points, getting four points from Tim Pollitz during the run, to post a 10-2 lead by the 16:03 mark. A Moosmann 3-pointer pushed the RedHawk lead to 11 points with 13:20 to play, 15-4, and a junior center Tyler Dierkers layup at 11:06 again put the RedHawk advantage at 11 points, 17-6.
BGSU used an 18-2 surge over the next nine minutes to capture a five point lead, 24-19. Darryl Clements had eight of Bowling Green's 18 points during the run. Tim Pollitz tossed in a layup with 2:22 to play to put the Red and White within three points, 24-21, but Marc Larson hit a jumper as the first half expired to hand the Falcons a 26-21 lead heading into the lockerroom.
With the Falcons holding a 29-23 lead early in the second half, Miami put together a 7-0 spurt off layups by Dierkers and Tim Pollitz and a Moosmann trey to post a 30-29 edge with 16:27 to play. BGSU came back and eventually took a nine-point lead, 43-34, with 7:31 to play. The Falcons led by seven with 3:57 remaining, but Miami persistently shrunk the gap to one points off a pair of Hayes free throws with 54 seconds left, 53-52.
Chris Knight knocked down a jumper with 25 seconds remaining to put the Falcons up three points, 55-52. After a RedHawk turnover and a quick foul, Knight went to the free-throw line to shoot one-and-one. With the Knight miss, Miami had one more chance to tie the game. The tying 3-point attempt, however was no good, allowing Bowling Green to come away with the 55-52 win.
The Falcons were led by Clements and Nate Miller with 15 points apiece, while Knight added 11 points and nine rebounds.
Miami returns home for "Doubleheader Saturday" with the men's team hosting Eastern Michigan in the second game of a women's and men's basketball doubleheader. The women's game is set for 2 p.m. with the men's game slated for approximately 4 p.m.
