BUFFALO--Miami University's men's basketball team suffered a 68-51 loss at Buffalo on Sunday evening. The RedHawks dropped to 5-10 overall and 1-2 in Mid-American Conference play, while the Bulls picked up their first MAC win, improving to 9-7 on the season and 1-2 in the MAC.
Miami scored the first five points of the game off a 3-pointer by freshman guard Alex Moosmann at the 19:12 mark and a layup by sophomore center/forward Tyler Dierkers at 18:35. Buffalo stormed back on a 10-0 run, spurred by six points from Yassin Idbihi, to take a 10-5 lead. A jumper by senior forward Nathan Peavy and a layup from sophomore guard/forward Michael Bramos closed the gap to one by the 11:26 mark, 10-9.
Buffalo would regain a five-point advantage until a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Carl Richburg and a Peavy layup with 4:39 to play handed Miami a 20-19 edge. But Buffalo came right back, and an Eric Moore trey with 1:18 to play in the half handed the Bulls their largest lead of the half, 27-21. Bramos cut the RedHawk deficit to four points with a layup with 51 seconds remaining, but the Bulls carried a six-point lead into the half off an Idbihi layup as time expired on the clock.
The Bulls went on a 10-4 run to start the second half and posted a 39-27 lead with 16:21 to play off an Andy Robinson three-point play. A jumper by junior forward Tim Pollitz and a pair of free throws by Michael Bramos cut the Bull lead to eight points, with 14:57 to play, 39-31. After a Moore layup, a Pollitz jumper again put the RedHawks within eight points, 41-33, with 14:12 to play. That would be the last time Miami would be within single digits of the Bulls as Buffalo charged to a 68-51 win.
Tim Pollitz led the RedHawks with 13 points, while Richburg added 11 points.
Idbihi led all players with 23 points, while Moore added 16 points and Robinson chipped in 11. Parnell Smith finished with a game-best 10 rebounds.
Miami returns home to host Bowling Green at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17.
