Final Stats
OXFORD, Ohio-- Miami University's volleyball team closed out its opening weekend of conference play by falling in three games to Toledo (21-30, 24-30, 23-30). With the loss, Miami drops to 4-11 on the season and 0-2 in the MAC, while Toledo improves to 4-11 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
Two kills by junior outside hitter Jeanna Staun and a block by sophomore outside hitter Alex Ratcliff and freshman middle hitter Hallie Hanks helped Miami to an early 8-3 lead in the first game. Toledo climbed back to knot the game, 13-13, but a kill by Hanks and a Rocket attack error put the RedHawks at a 15-13 edge. A kill by Toledo's Sarah Kreher and a Miami attack error handed the Rockets a 17-16 lead. After a Rocket service error tied the game 18-18, Toledo went on a 7-0 surge with help from two blocks by Emi Holsclaw and Liz Sunburg to capture a 25-18 advantage. From there, the Rockets took the first game 30-21. TaNeisha Winters had eight kills in the first game for the Rockets.
In the second game, Toledo built a quick 12-3 lead off a balanced offensive attack that included two kills apiece by Kreher and Kate Bean. With Toledo holding an18-10 lead, Miami went on an 8-0 run, spurred by two kills apiece by Hanks and Schroeder and capped by a service ace from junior middle hitter Carli Reihman, to knot the game 18-18. A Schroeder kill gave Miami the 21-20 edge, but Toledo rattled off six unanswered points, with help from two Bean kills, to post a 26-21 lead and went on to take game two, 30-24.
Game three stayed tight as both teams were knotted as late as 11-11. After trailing by four at 12-16, four attack errors by Toledo helped Miami crawl back into the game as Miami cut its deficit to one at 18-19. However, seven of the next eight points went to Toledo and the Rockets did not look back as Toledo went on to win game three, 30-23.
For Miami, Reihman collected a team-best 12 kills while sophomore libero Melissa Zenz tallied a team-high nine digs.
Toledo was led by Winters, who collected a match-high 16 kills and Lora Sarich, who collected a match-best 14 digs.
The RedHawks hit the road for two MAC contests next week, playing at Bowling Green on Wednesday, Sept. 27 and at Western Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 30. Both matches are set for 7 p.m.
