Miami Drops Three-Game Match at Toledo

Sept. 24, 2005

Box Score

TOLEDO, Ohio--Miami University's volleyball team capped its Mid-American Conference opening weekend with a three-game loss at Toledo, 28-30, 15-30 and 14-30. Miami drops to 7-6 overall and 0-2 in MAC play, while the Rockets improve to 9-5 overall 2-0 in MAC play.

After falling behind by 13 points in the first game, 11-24, Miami stormed back on the Rockets, going on a 17-2 run, which included a 9-0 stretch, to take a 28-27 lead in the game. Two RedHawk attack errors and a Toledo kill, however, stymied the Miami rally as the Rockets took the first game, 30-28. Miami's 9-0 run was spurred by two sophomore outside hitter Jeanna Staun (Loveland, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) service aces and two kills by freshman middle hitter Emily Schroeder (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard).

Toledo took command from the start in the second game and never looked back. The Rockets quickly built a 4-1 lead and rolled to the 30-15 game-two win. For the RedHawks, Schroeder and senior outside hitter Kristen Walters (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) teamed up for two blocks during the set. Toledo, the MAC's leader in service aces, notched four aces in the game.

Again, Toledo steamrolled to a commanding lead in the third game. A 5-0 run spurred the Rockets to 10-point lead, 18-8. Schroeder knocked down a kill to hault the Rocket run. A kill from sophomore middle hitter Carli Reihman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) pulled the RedHawks within nine again, 10-19, but Toledo went on a 6-0 surge, spurred by three service aces from Kelsey Culver, to post a 25-10 lead. Staun was able to put away three kills for the RedHawks down the stretch, but it was not enough as the Rockets went on to collect the 30-14 game-three win.

For Miami, senior libero Suzy Wolford (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) notched a team-best 13 digs and is nine away from reaching 1,000 career kills.

Kate Bean and Chelsey Poquette led the Rockets with 16 kills apiece, while Lora Sarich notched a match-best 19 digs. Bean also tallied 14 digs.

Miami travels to Bowling Green on Wednesday, Sept. 28 to battle the Falcons at 7 p.m.
