OXFORD, Ohio - Senior defenseman Brian Sipotz (Granger, Ind.) officially became a member of the National Hockey League early this week when he signed a contract with the Atlanta Thrashers. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Sipotz signs with the team after being drafted by the Thrashers in the fourth round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
Sipotz, 22, finished his collegiate career with three assists and 39 penalty minutes in 36 games this past season with the Red and White. The 6-7, 245-poiund defenseman was fourth on the squad with a plus-nine rating, and also set career highs with three assists, three points and 36 games. He helped the RedHawks finish second in the CCHA with a 17-8-3 record and was a member of the school's first NCAA squad since 1996-97.
Next year's version of the Miami hockey team, without Sipotz, opens its season on Oct. 3 with an exhibition contest against Windsor. The puck drops at 2 p.m. in Goggin Ice Arena.
