OXFORD, Ohio - The Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced this afternoon its 2003-04 All-Rookie Team and on it are two members of the No. 9 Miami hockey team. Freshmen forwards Matt Christie (Ajax, Ontario) and Marty Guerin (Lansing, Mich.) join four other CCHA rookies on the team after tying for fourth on the Red and White in scoring with 30 points each.
The duo becomes the first pair of Miami rookies to earn all-rookie status since Craig Fisher and Ken House accomplished the same feat in 1988-89. Overall, only eight Miami freshmen have ever made the all-rookie team, which Christie and Guerin now up to 10 all-time.
Christie was the CCHA's leading power-play goal scorer this season with six power-play goals in conference play and eight power-play markers overall. He recorded 12 goals in conference play, tying him with two others for the freshman lead, and was tied for fourth on his team in overall scoring with 19-11-30. His 19 goals are the highest total of any freshman in Division I hockey this season. Three times this season Christie notched the game-winner, including an overtime game-winner at home against Alaska Fairbanks on Nov. 22.
Guerin emerged as the second-highest scoring rookie in conference play with 11 goals and 24 points in 28 games. He was one of just six freshmen to record a shorthanded goal this season and finished tied for the team lead with a +10 rating in conference play. Seven times this season Guerin recorded multiple points in a contest, which is fourth overall on the RedHawks.
Also receiving credit for his efforts this season is freshman goalie Brandon Crawford-West (San Diego, Calif.) who is an honorable mention pick. Twice this season Crawford-West earned CCHA Defensive Player of the Week honors. He boasts one of the nation's best winning percentages with an 18-6-3 record heading into the playoffs.
The RedHawks enter this weekend's first-round series as the No. 2 seed in the tournament and face No. 11 Lake Superior State on Friday, March 12, at 7:35 p.m. in Goggin Ice Arena. The second game of the series is on Saturday, March 13, and game three, if necessary, is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. on Sunday, March 14.
