OXFORD, Ohio - Miami hockey has its first Central Collegiate Hockey Association Player of the Week honor this week after senior Derek Edwardson (Morton Grove, Ill.) netted four goals and two assists in a split against No. 2 Michigan this weekend. The honor is the second of Edwardson's career after being named Offensive Player of the Week as a freshman in 2000-01.
In its 8-3 win over Michigan on Friday, Oct. 10, Edwardson registered his second career hat trick for the Red and White. He also added two assists in the victory for a grand total of five points, giving him his first career five-point game and Miami's first in recent history. Edwardson helped lift Miami to its first victory over the Wolverines since the 1997-98 campaign, while also avenging last year's series at UM where he suffered a season-ending leg injury.
Edwardson tallied the RedHawks' lone marker in Saturday's 2-1 loss to give him four goals and two assists on the weekend. He now leads the team in scoring with six points and is 22 points away from the century mark for career points. His six points and four goals are tops in the CCHA.
His hat trick is the first three-goal outing for a Miami player since classmate Greg Hogeboom (Etobicoke, Ontario) scored three against Lake Superior State on March 7 last season.
Miami hits the road for three straight weeks now before its next home weekend in Goggin Ice Arena. The RedHawks next competition is in Anchorage, Alaska, Oct. 17-18, as they play in the Nye Frontier Classic. Miami's first round opponent is UMass.-Lowell, and the puck drops at 5 p.m. Alaska time.
