OXFORD, Ohio - Five third-period goals led the Miami University (1-2-0, 1-0-0 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) hockey team to an electrifying 8-3 victory over the No. 2 Michigan Wolverines on Friday night at Goggin Ice Arena. Senior forward Derek Edwardson (Morton Grove, Ill.) lit up the Wolverines with a hat trick and two assists for a career night, five points, while helping the RedHawks to their first win over UM since 1997-98.
The game started off slowly as no one scored until Miami junior Todd Grant (Indianapolis, Ind.) netted a power-play marker at 16:34. After several shots on goal, Edwardson fed Grant on the right wing with a pass that was immediately redirected into the upper half of the goal. Assisting on the first goal of the game was sophomore Andy Greene (Trenton, Mich.).
Michigan (1-1-0, 0-1-0 CCHA) responded a little over a minute later with its first goal, 17:43, to tie the game at 1-1. T.J. Hensick broke through the Red and White defense and slipped the puck past freshman goalie Brandon Crawford-West (San Diego, Calif.) for a power-play goal.
Another power-play goal found the back of the cage before the end of the first period, this time off the stick of Edwardson, giving Miami a 2-1 lead entering the first intermission. Edwardson cam right back in the second period and stole the puck from UM's power-play unit, and skated in untouched for a short-handed opportunity. A quick shot from the right wing found the five-hole of UM goalie Al Montoya, giving Edwardson a short-handed goal and the RedHawks a 3-1 lead.
UM's David Rohlfs recorded an unassisted marker of his own at 16:41 in the second period to narrow the gap, 3-2. Rohlfs gathered in an unsuccessful wrap by a Miami defenseman and surprised the RedHawk goalie with a quick wrist shot from the base redline. The goal was Rohlfs' first of the season.
Holding on to a slim one-goal lead entering the final 20 minutes, the RedHawks opened up the scoring with five unanswered goals in the frame. Senior forward Mike Kompon (Thunder Bay, Ontario) scored a power-play goal only 20 seconds into the period, and was quickly followed by an even-strength goal from classmate Greg Hogeboom (Etobicoke, Ontario).
Freshman Marty Guerin (Lansing, Mich.) got in on the fun at 5:50 when he netted his first career goal against Montoya. Guerin's goal was the last shot that Montoya would face for the Wolverines as he was pulled after allowing six goals in favor of backup netminder Noah Ruden. Assisting on Guerin's goal was Edwardson, his fourth of five points on the night.
The RedHawks scored on four-of-five power plays in the victory, and scoring that fourth power-play marker for the home team was sophomore forward Chris Michael (Glenview, Ill.) at 8:23. Michael scooped up an errant rebound off Ruden's pads in the face-off circle and promptly ripped a shot by the Michigan goalie to give Miami a 7-2 lead.
Edwardson, who had one hat trick already in his career, completed the trick with his third goal of the contest at 10:22 in the final frame. Miami fans promptly tossed their hats on the ice, not realizing that Edwardson's goal also marked the first time in the history of the Miami-Michigan series that the Red and White scored eight goals in a single game. In fact, the RedHawks had scored eight goals combined in the last four games against UM.
Michigan's Jeff Tambellini added a goal before the final buzzer at 15:31 to bring the game to its final tally, 8-3. Crawford-West stopped Tambellini's first two shots on net, but was unable to stop his third shot as he was on top off the crease in premium property.
Despite being outshot in the contest, 35-32, the Miami power-play unit picked up the slack by going 4-for-5, compared to Michigan's 1-for-10 evening.
In his first collegiate start between the pipes, Crawford-West was quite simply spectacular, stopping 32 shots against the No. 2 Wolverines. The freshman netminder stopped 11 and 13 shots, respectively, in the first two periods.
The win also marks the first time in head coach Enrico Blasi's career that he has beat the Wolverines.
Kompon, who recorded three points in the victory, is now only two points away from the 100-point career milestone. He attempts to become the 33rd player in Miami history to reach the 100-point mark.
Miami and Michigan wrap up the series tomorrow night, Oct. 11, at 7:35 p.m. in Goggin Ice Arena.
