OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University's volleyball team (8-7) dropped a five-game match to Wright State (14-4), 30-27, 28-30, 22-30, 30-25 and 12-15.
The first game was a nip-and-tuck battled through the early stages, but Miami pulled out to a six-point lead, 13-19, midway through the game. Wright State climbed to within two, 27-29, but a block by Susan Poll (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Kentwood) and Erika Eagan (Bloomington, Ill./Tri-Valley) iced the game for the RedHawks, 30-27. Lee Ann Karr (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) notched six of Miami's 18 kills in the first game and helped the 'Hawks to a .289 hitting percentage with her .600 attack efficiency.
In the second game, the RedHawks jumped out to an early 8-5 lead. The two teams went back and forth, tied on eight different occasions. WSU took a 20-19 lead, an edge it would not relinquish, off a Miami service error. The Raiders built a five-point advantage, their largest of the game, 25-20. Two consecutive service aces by Eagan pulled the RedHawks to within two, 23-25. A kill by Karis Day handed the Raiders a 29-26 edge, however, kills by Kelly McCullough (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and Eagan closed the gap to one, 28-29. Day recorded the final kill for Wright State to give the Raiders the 30-28 win.
In the third game, Wright State took control from the start, and led by as many as 10, cruising to a 30-22 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Wright State owned a seven-point lead, 22-15, but Miami inched its way back to take the fourth game, 30-25. The RedHawks rattled off five unanswered points off two McCullough service aces, a kill by McCullough and two kills by Eagan to pull within two, 20-22. WSU collected two points to extend its advantage to 24-20. Miami, however, went on a seven-point run spurred by two Karr kills, an Eagan kill and several Raider attack errors to take a 29-24 lead. Andrea Voss gave Wright State its 25th point off a kills, but Poll retaliated for the 'Hawks with a kill of her own to hand Miami the 30-25 come-from-behind win to even the match 2-2.
Despite battling Wright State to a 5-5 tie in the early stages of the fifth game, Miami fell 12-15. The Raiders took a 10-5 edge, but Miami pulled to with in two, 12-14. Day nailed the final kill for the Raiders to ice the match with a 15-12 deciding-game win.
Miami had five players in double figures for kills, led by McCullough's 19 kills, 14 digs, five blocks (two solo, three assist) and two service aces. Karr notched 15 kills and nine digs, while Eagan tallied 14 kills, 18 digs and three service aces. Amy Doran (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) also posted three service aces.
For Wright State, Day produced 27 kills, 12 digs and a .543 hitting percentage. Voss added 21 kills and 14 digs, while Liza Osterhage posted 17 kills and seven blocks (one solo, six assist).
Miami returns to action next week, traveling to Bowling Green for a 7 p.m. match on Friday and playing at Kent State at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
