OXFORD, Ohio— The Miami University volleyball team (4-4) took down Middle Tennessee (4-3) in four sets (25-19, 21-25, 25-17, 25-14) at the Best Western Invitational on Friday morning.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Chelsea Williams and Raegan Lantz each put down a pair of kills, helping the RedHawks jump out to a 9-3 lead in the first set. Middle Tennessee then closed within two points at 11-9, but the Red and White answered with a 5-0 run, forcing the second Blue Raider timeout at 16-9. While Middle Tennessee continued to keep it close, a Gentry Warrick kill combined with a Hayden Hicks service ace ended the first set and handed the RedHawks a 25-19 win.
- A collection of early kills from Lantz and Lauren Coyne kept Miami ahead 7-6 at the start of the second set. Although the Blue Raiders tried to pull away at 14-12, numerous attack errors, including a Warrick solo block, put Miami back on top at 15-14. When the set was tied at 17-17, Middle Tennessee responded and ultimately sealed a 25-21 second-set victory.
- The RedHawks came out strong at the beginning of the third set and quickly built a 7-0 lead. Although Middle Tennessee found a way to even the set at 11 apiece, the Blue Raiders soon led 13-12. With Coyne delivering three consecutive kills, Miami sparked a 7-0 run to make it 19-13. Not looking back, Miami closed out the third set with a 25-17 win.
- The fourth set consisted of close play initially, as Miami led 7-6 after Coyne put down a couple of kills and a service ace. Leading 8-7, the RedHawks used a 9-1 run to extend their lead to 17-8. An attack error by the Blue Raiders and kills from Williams and Lindy Radaszewski secured the fourth set, 25-14.
NOTES:
- Coyne led all players with a career-high 17 kills.
- Kamryn Utley totaled the most assists (31) of her career to lead both teams in the match.
- Radaszewski led the RedHawks with two service aces.
