RedHawks Fall to Huskies in Extras After Walk-Off Slam

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Miami struck first, putting up one run in the second inning. Dominic Krupinski stole second and Ignacio Gonzalez doubled to right field to make it 1-0.
- Ryan Novak and Evan Appelwick hit back-to-back home runs in the third, extending the lead to 3-0.
- A walk, single, and double put two on the board for the Huskies in the bottom of the third. Two more singles and a home run gave NIU a 6-3 lead.
- The RedHawks battled back in the fifth, starting the inning with three straight singles from Marcus Dierks, Novak, and Appelwick. Harrison hit a grand slam to propel Miami back into the lead, 7-6.
- A solo homer by NIU tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Another solo home in the sixth gave the Huskies the lead back at 8-7.
- Harrison hit his second home run of the day in the top of the seventh to tie the game again at 8-8.
- Miami went on a tear in the eighth, scoring five more runs to make it 13-8. After a single and two walks, Harrison took an RBI HBP to score one run and a sac fly by Carson Raether scored another. Gonzalez came up with a two-RBI double and Mason Briedenbach capped off the inning with a single to score Miami's 13th run.
- The Huskies answered with five runs of their own, tying the ballgame at 13-13 with five hits. A scoreless ninth took the game to extras.
- Two walks and a single loaded the bases for NIU in the 10th. The Huskies hit a walk-off grand slam to finish out their 10-inning win.
MIAMI GAME NOTES:
- Dierks went 3-for-5 with two runs.
- Novak went 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.
- Appelwick went 2-for-5 with three runs and an RBI.
- Harrison went 2-for-4 with three runs and six RBIs.
- Gonzalez went 2-for-5 with a run and three RBIs.
- Breidenbach went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
UP NEXT:
Game two against the Huskies is scheduled for 3 p.m. tomorrow. The series will conclude with a 2 p.m. game on Sunday.
