RedHawks Earn Four-Set Road Win Over Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. — The Miami University volleyball team (11-5, 3-2 MAC) got past Ball State (11-5, 2-3 MAC) in a four-set match (25-16, 19-25, 25-18, 25-20) on Tuesday evening.
Molly Creech led all players with 20 kills, and Chelsea Williams recorded the second most of the match with 14 of her own. Kamryn Utley produced the most assists for the RedHawks, while Holland Van Deusen followed closely behind with 20 assists and added a match-high three service aces. Defensively, Rachel Morgan had a team-high 20 digs, and Lydia Michelin led the match with nine blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The RedHawks stormed out to an 11-2 lead in the first set, as a pair of kills from Van Deusen and a service ace from Utley highlighted the strong start. The Cardinals looked to fight their way back into the set at 16-10 when Miami scored three straight points behind a Grace Kreutz and Creech kill. Utley assisted Williams, who scored the final three points of the set for Miami, to secure a 25-16 first-set win.
- Two blocks from Michelin, as well as a flurry of kills from Creech and Williams, gave Miami an 11-10 edge in the second set. No team led by more than three points until Ball State went on a scoring run to take a 16-13 advantage and eventually jumped ahead 18-13. Back-to-back kills from Kreutz kept Miami in the fight at 18-16. The Cardinals went on to earn a 25-19 second-set victory.
- The Red and White took an early 7-3 lead in the third set behind five kills. Michelin's second block of the set and an attack error from the Cardinals put the RedHawks on top 10-6. Ball State answered by evening the score at 10 apiece. With the score knotted at 16-16, a Williams kill, as well as a Williams and Michelin block, forced a Ball State timeout at 19-16. Van Deusen and Kreutz combined for three service aces in the final stretch of the third set to take down Ball State 25-18.
- Three Creech kills and another Van Deusen service ace put the RedHawks in control at 7-4 in the beginning of the fourth set. The Cardinals closed within one point at 10-9 when Miami responded by outscoring Ball State 7-2 to hold on to the lead at 17-11. Van Deusen and Morgan each added another service ace during the scoring run. Two errors from the home team and a collection of kills from the RedHawks helped Miami seal the fourth set, 25-20.
NOTES:
- This is Miami's first victory against Ball State since March 23, 2021.
- This win marks the RedHawks first road victory versus Ball State since Oct. 25, 2019.
- Miami totaled four more service aces than Ball State (seven to three).
- Creech recorded a double-double (20 kills and 13 digs).
