OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami University volleyball team (12-5, 4-2 MAC) defeated Central Michigan (0-18, 0-5 MAC) in a three-set match (25-21, 25-9, 25-17) on Friday evening.
Molly Creech led the RedHawks with 13 kills, and Grace Kreutz added 11 of her own. Kamryn Utley and Holland Van Deusen each produced 17 assists for the RedHawks; Van Deusen also served three aces, which led the match. Rachel Morgan had a team-high nine digs, while Michelin and Lauren Coyne both had two blocks to lead the RedHawks defensively.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Trailing 4-2 at the start of the first set, a kill from Creech led to a four-point scoring burst by the RedHawks to jump on top 6-4. The Chippewas went on to even the score at seven apiece before Kreutz sparked Miami's offense by putting down three kills to force a Central Michigan timeout at 12-8. CMU once again fought its way back into the set at 13-12, but Miami responded with two kills, as well as a block from Creech and Grace Lantz to regain control at 16-12. Two kills from Creech and a bad set from Central Michigan helped the RedHawks fend off the Chippewas for a 25-21 first-set win.
- Creech found her rhythm at the beginning of the second set, as she recorded three kills and a service ace to help Miami force Central Michigan into a timeout at 9-4. Leading 9-5, the RedHawks rattled off 10 consecutive points behind numerous kills and a pair of Van Deusen service aces to push their advantage to 19-5 and force the second CMU timeout of the set. Two blocks and a kill from Coyne and a Chelsea Williams kill secured a 25-9 second-set victory.
- Miami grabbed a 9-3 lead in the third set thanks to a Van Deusen service ace and a collection of kills, as well as two bad sets and a service error from the visitors. The Chippewas battled their way back into the set at 13-12 when Miami answered with a flurry of kills that made the visiting team call a timeout at 19-15. Lydia Michelin hit three late kills, and Kreutz served an ace to put the RedHawks over the top in the third set, 25-17.
