BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – On Wednesday afternoon the Miami University softball team took down Bowling Green State University in both games of the doubleheader. In game one it was two homers and three RBI from
Shelby Kunkel that led the RedHawks to a 10-4 win. In game two it was shutout pitching from Léa Chevrier paired with a RedHawk offense that had seven extra-base hits that secured the 12-0 victory. The RedHawks move to 28-23 (17-7 Mid-American Conference). Bowling Green drops to 15-35 (7-19 MAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
- In the top of the third, Shelby Kunkel got the RedHawks started with a solo home run over left field to grab a 1-0 lead.
- A two-run homer followed up with a solo homer from the Falcons in the bottom of the third allowed Bowling Green to take a 3-1 lead.
- In the top of the fourth, Holly Merritt hit a RBI single that pushed Ella Carter across home, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
- Merritt then stole second while Jenna Golembiewski stole third. On a throwing error, Golembiewski was able to cross home and tie the game 3-3.
- Erin Pinter followed that up with a sac groundout that allowed Merritt to score, giving the RedHawks a 4-3 lead.
- Still in the fourth, Kunkel hit her second homer of the day, this time also bringing in Danitza Hernandez to extend the lead to 6-4.
- In the bottom of the fifth, the Falcons made it a 6-4 game with a RBI single.
- Chloe Parks hit a sac fly in the top of the sixth that allowed Pinter to cross home and up the advantage to 7-4.
- In the top of the seventh, Hernandez drew a walk with the bases loaded to allow Sydney Gilbert to score and up the lead to 8-4.
- Still in the seventh, Kaylee Oh hit a two-RBI single to let Pinter and Merritt score to further increase the lead to 10-4.
- The RedHawks held this lead through the end of the game to take the win 10-4.
NOTES:
- Kunkel went 2-for-4 with two homers. This is her fourth two-homer game this season. She was also responsible for a third of the RedHawks RBI.
- Merritt also went 2-for-4 at the plate. Kaylee Oh went 3-for-4.
- Madilyn Reeves pitched the complete game on the rubber, striking out 10 and giving up just seven hits.
- Six RedHawks had hits, and six were credited RBI.
- Seven RedHawks scored runs.
- The Red and White stole four bases in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
- Oh got it started for the RedHawks in game two with a RBI double that scored Kunkel and took a 1-0 lead for the RedHawks.
- Later that inning, a single from Mckenna Campbell allowed Oh to score and double the lead to 2-0.
- In the top of the second, Kunkel hit a RBI single that scored Pinter. Oh followed that up with a two-RBI double that scored Kunkel and Hernandez to push the score to 5-0.
- Still in the second, Campbell singled to left field, which allowed Oh to cross home and make it a 6-0 game.
- In the top of the third, Pinter and Golembiewski performed a double steal where Pinter took second and Golembiewski took home to increase the difference to 7-0.
- Campbell hit a homer down the left field line that also scored Parks in the top of the fourth, pushing the Miami lead to 9-0.
- Later that same inning, Ella Carter scored when Golembiewski hit a home run over left, pushing the advantage to 11-0.
- Still in the fourth, Kari Krueger hit a RBI single up the middle that scored Pinter and extended the lead to 12-0.
- The RedHawks held this through the end of the fifth to take the win 12-0.
NOTES:
- Campbell went 4-for-4 at the plate.
- Golembiewski went 2-for-3 and Oh went 2-for-4 at the plate.
- Nine RedHawks had hits in the game, and eight scored runs.
- The Red and White tallied seven extra-base hits, recorded by five different RedHawks.
- Chevrier pitched the complete game, not allowing a single run and striking out three. She allowed just three hits in the game, none of which were for extra bases.
