Former Miami Hockey great Alec Martinez announced that tonight would be his final game in the National Hockey League. Martinez, a defenseman for the Chicago Blackhawks, has played 862 NHL games since making his NHL debut in 2009, collecting 88 goals and 201 assists. The fourth-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Kings in 2007 also put up 37 postseason points (14-23-37) in 131 playoff games, most memorably scoring the Stanley Cup-clinching goal in double overtime to give the Kings the 2014 title. Martinez has won three Stanley Cups in all (2012 and 2014 with the Kings, 2023 with the Vegas Golden Knights), and also earned a bronze medal with the United States in the 2018 IIHF World Championships.
Â
Martinez produced 67 points (21-46-67) in 123 games played for Miami Hockey from 2005-08, ranking eighth in program history for career goals by a defenseman. He was a Second-Team West All-American in 2007-08, earning the CCHA's Defensive Defenseman of the Year recognition and First-Team All-CCHA honors. His RedHawk teams participated in three NCAA Tournaments, including a CCHA championship season in 2005-06 and a 33-win season in 2007-08. He was inducted into Miami Athletics' Hall of Fame in 2024.
Â
"On behalf of the Miami Hockey family, we would like to congratulate Alec Martinez on an outstanding career and wish him and his family all the best," said RedHawk head coach Anthony Noreen.
