MINNEAPOLIS – On Friday afternoon, the Miami University softball team fell 10-9 to the University of St. Thomas. The Tommies move to 7-7 on the season. The RedHawks then faced North Dakota State University and downed the Bison 9-1 in six innings. The Bison drop to 7-8 on the season. The RedHawks move to 5-11.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
- In the top of the first, Jenna Golembiewski got the RedHawks out to a 1-0 lead with a solo home run over left field.
- Two scored for the Tommies in the bottom of the first on an error, giving them a 2-1 lead.
- In the bottom of the second, a RBI single from the Tommies allowed a run to cross the plate. In that same inning, an error allowed another run to cross, upping the Tommies' lead to 4-1.
- Kaylee Oh hit a two-run homer in the top of the third, which also scored Madie Patton, and cut the deficit to 4-3.
- Shelby Kunkel immediately followed that up with a solo home run and tied the game at 4-4.
- The Tommies took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the third with two solo homers.
- In the bottom of the fourth, a RBI single scored another for the Tommies, pushing their lead to 7-4.
- A two-run homer from St. Thomas in the bottom of the fifth scored two more, increasing the margin to 9-4.
- Oh hit a RBI double in the top of the sixth, allowing Patton to score. Kunkel then singled to center to score Oh and make it a 9-6 game.
- In the bottom of the sixth, a RBI single from the Tommies extended their lead to 10-6.
- Ella Carter hit a RBI single in the top of the seventh, scoring Chloe Parks. Danitza Hernandez then hit a line drive sacrifice to left field, letting Mckenna Campbell score, cutting the difference to 10-8. A bases-loaded walk to Kunkel brought Holly Merritt in to score, making it a one-run game at 10-9. But, the RedHawks could not come back, giving the Tommies the win.
NOTES:
- Kunkel went 3-for-4 at the plate. Oh, Carter and Parks went 2-for-4.
- Oh and Kunkel each notched three RBI in the game.
- Kunkel, Oh, and Golembiewski each had homers.
- Seven different RedHawks scored runs.
- Eight different RedHawks had hits.
- The RedHawks tallied five extra-base hits in the game.
- Madilyn Reeves went four innings in the circle.
- Shelbie Krieger pitched two innings on the bump, allowing just two hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
- In the bottom of the first, Parks hit a RBI single that scored Kunkel to give the RedHawks a 1-0 lead.
- Hernandez hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the second that also scored Carter to extend the RedHawks' lead to 3-0.
- The Bison got on the board in the top of the fourth with a RBI single, making it a 3-1 game.
- In the bottom of the fourth, a pair of solo homers from Hernandez and Merritt upped the Miami lead to 5-1.
- Golembiewski hit a solo homer of her own in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead further to 6-1.
- Still in the fifth, Parks scored on a RBI single from Carter to push the Red and White's lead to 7-1.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Merritt scored on a RBI single from Kunkel to increase Miami's lead to 8-1.
- Still in the sixth, Golembiewski hit a RBI single that scored Sydney Gilbert, giving the RedHawks the 10-1 win.
NOTES:
- Golembiewski went 3-for-4 at the plate.
- Campbell, Carter, Hernandez, and Merritt all went 2-for-3 at the plate.
- Golembiewski and Hernandez each had three RBI.
- Six RedHawks notched RBI.
- Every RedHawk that had an at-bat recorded at least one hit.
- Seven RedHawks scored runs.
- The Red and White totaled five extra-base hits.
- Léa Chevrier pitched the complete game, allowing just six hits, all singles.
