COLUMBIA, SC – On Sunday afternoon the Miami University softball team defeated Winthrop University 7-0. Thanks to some stellar pitching from Léa Chevrier, the RedHawks took their first shutout win of the season. Winthrop drops to 5-3 on the season. The RedHawks move to 3-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the bottom of the second, Kaylee Oh singled to center and Ella Carter scored to put the RedHawks up 1-0.
- Chloe Parks followed that up with a sac fly to score Danitza Hernandez. Immediately after, Holly Merritt hit a RBI single that allowed Oh to score and push the lead to 3-0.
- Still in the second, Jenna Golembiewski hit a three-run homer that also scored Merritt and Erin Pinter, extending the lead to 6-0.
- Through the next three innings the score remained unchanged.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Pinter hit a RBI single to score Parks and increase the lead to 7-0.
- The RedHawks held this lead through the end of the game to take the 7-0 victory.
NOTES:
- Pinter went 3-for-3 at the plate. Merritt went 2-for-3 and Golembiewski went 2-for-4.
- Golembiewski notched three RBI in the game.
- Seven different RedHawks had hits, five had RBI, and seven scored runs.
- Oh is now on a three-game hitting streak.
- Chevrier pitched the complete shutout, allowing just five hits and two walks. She struck out six.
UP NEXT: Next weekend the RedHawks head to Madison, Ala. to play in the Rocket City Showcase. Their first game is Friday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. against James Madison University.
