RedHawks Fall to CSU 13-3 on Opening Day

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The RedHawks fell 13-3 to the Charleston Southern University (CSU) Buccaneers after a five-run eighth inning for the Bucs. David Novak posted two RBIs and one run during the contest on three at bats.

The RedHawks will stay in Charleston and will face The Citadel tomorrow for a doubleheader. Game one is slated for 12 p.m. and game two is set for 3 p.m. They will then look for redemption against CSU on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSU's Anthony Sanguedolce led off the bottom of the first with a triple. Kaden Smith drove him home with a single, putting the Bucs up 1-0.
- In the top of the second, first-baseman Evan Appelwick reached first on an error and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. A passed ball moved him to third, and David Novak homered to left center to put Miami ahead 2-1.
- Austin Berggren pitched three straight outs in the second. He also went three up three down in the third, which included two strikeouts.
- Aiden McAskie hit a home run to left field in the bottom of the fourth for CSU to tie the score at two runs apiece.
- Ryan Novak tripled down the left field line in the top of the fifth. Newcomer Ignacio Gonzalez then secured his first hit as a RedHawk, a double, to drive Novak home and make it 3-2 Miami.
- The Bucs led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk, and Lucas Pringle advanced the runner to third with a single. Each base runner stole a bag, tying the game at three runs each. Pringle advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and Smith scored him on a sacrifice fly to give CSU a 4-3 lead.
- Nick Vardavas threw a groundout and two strikeouts in the bottom of the sixth to render the inning scoreless for the Bucs.
- Nathan Martinez had a leadoff single for CSU in the bottom of the seventh. Blake Edgmon moved Martinez to second with a single, and both runners then advanced. A single by Pringle drove in one run for the Bucs, and Sanguedolcea hit another single to make the score 6-3.
- The RedHawks caught Pringle trying to steal third, and Sanguedolce successfully stole second. Chandler Tuupo doubled to extend the lead to 7-3. Martin continued the barrage of singles, sending Tuupo to home plate and making it an 8-3 CSU advantage.
- The Bucs led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk, and a groundout advanced the runner to second. Another walk put a runner on first for CSU, and an HBP loaded the bases. Kain Collins singled to score one runner.
- Tuupo hit a grand slam over the right field wall, capping off a 13-3 win in eight innings for CSU.
MIAMI GAME NOTES
- David Novak went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run.
- Austin Berggren held the Bucs to three hits and two runs in 4.0 innings of work, racking up five strikeouts.
