RedHawks Sweep NIU in Three Sets

OXFORD, Ohio— The Miami University volleyball team (9-7, 3-1 MAC) swept Northern Illinois (9-4, 2-2 MAC) in three sets (25-16, 25-21, 25-11) on Friday evening at Millett Hall. Several RedHawks had match-leading performances, as Lauren Coyne recorded 13 kills (.458 hitting percentage), Kamryn Utley dished out 20 assists and Hayden Hicks poured in three service aces. Defensively, Coyne smacked down seven blocks, and Lindsay Kahren totaled 23 digs.

The RedHawks continue conference play by hosting Ball State on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A pair of kills from Coyne at the beginning of the first set helped give Miami a 4-1 lead. With a 10-8 advantage, the RedHawks found their groove, as they went on a 13-3 run to jump ahead 23-11. A fake set from Hicks that resulted in a kill and a powerful kill from Ellie Hanson sealed the first set for Miami at 25-16.
- Two straight service aces from Hicks gave the Red and White a 5-1 lead in set two. The Huskies rallied to put the score at 14-11, but another Hicks ace and several RedHawk kills extended the gap to 19-12. Despite a late Huskies surge, Miami claimed the set 25-21 with a Gentry Warrick kill set up by Utley.
- The Huskies opened the third set by taking the first three points. Coyne then sparked Miami's offense, recording four kills to claim an 8-3 lead and forcing two NIU timeouts. Creech and Michelin added a pair of kills each, pushing the score to 16-6. Chelsea Williams followed with two more kills, and a Huskies service error sealed the set, giving the RedHawks a 25-11 win.
- The RedHawks produced their second highest team hitting percentage (.330) of the season in a match.
- Miami produced more kills (41), service aces (4), digs (55), assists (40) and blocks (10) than Northern Illinois.
The RedHawks continue conference play by hosting Ball State on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m.
