OXFORD, Ohio— The Miami University volleyball team (10-10, 4-4 MAC) won a five-set match (25-21, 22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-10) against Kent State (7-12, 2-6 MAC) on Thursday night at Millett Hall. Offensively, Chelsea Williams (20) and Molly Creech (16) led the RedHawks, while Hayden Hicks dished out 36 assists. Defensively, Gentry Warrick put down six blocks, and Anna McClure added 22 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Williams' three early kills put the RedHawks up 5-3. Kent State briefly led 6-5 before attack errors and a Creech kill gave Miami an 11-8 edge. Tied at 13-13, kills from Williams and Creech, plus a Creech ace, forced a Kent State timeout with Miami ahead 20-16. The RedHawks secured the first set 25-21.
- The second set began tightly, with a 5-5 tie. A Williams' kill brought Miami within 10-9, but Kent State scored three straight to lead 13-9. Miami rallied to 15-14, tying the set 19-19 with a Lindy Radaszewski ace. Despite their push, Kent State took the set 25-22.
- The RedHawks opened the third set with five kills and a block for a 6-3 lead. Creech's kill and Warrick's ace helped reclaim a 10-9 advantage. Miami led 16-14 before Kent State surged ahead 18-16. The RedHawks responded with a 4-0 run led by Creech's kills, and Lydia Michelin's two final kills secured the set 25-22.
- Miami led 4-1 in the fourth set and continued to fend off the Golden Flashes' attack at 9-6. Grace Kreutz recorded her second service ace of the set to keep the RedHawks above Kent State at 14-13. The Golden Flashes went on to take control of the set at 22-18, and the gap proved to be too large, as Kent State won the fourth set 25-22.
- A Creech service ace and three kills gave Miami a 4-0 lead and forced an early timeout by Kent State in the fifth set. The Golden Flashes didn't give in, knotting the score up at 5-5. A pair of blocks from Warrick and a couple of kills from Williams pushed Miami to a three-point lead at 9-6. A collection of kills, as well as a block from Michelin and Creech, moved the RedHawks Past Kent State at 15-10.
