RedHawks Grab 5-3 Road Win at RPI

TROY, N.Y.— Ilia Morozov and Kocha Delic each scored twice and the Miami University hockey team rallied from a two-goal deficit to earn a 5-3 road win at RPI Friday night. Maximilion Helgeson also found the back of the net for the RedHawks (3-0-0), who closed the game with four unanswered goals and spoiled the season opener for the Engineers (0-1-0).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 5:45 1st (Miami 1-0) | Miami opened the scoring on the game's first power play, as Doug Grimes sent a pass across to Morozov in the far faceoff circle. Morozov promptly deposited a shot in the back of the net to make it 1-0. Matteo Giampa provided the secondary assist, initially dropping the puck to Grimes behind him.
- 6:28 1st (RPI 1-1) | The Engineers quickly got a power play of their own and answered back to tie the game only seconds later. Off a Luc Wilson faceoff win, Kaz Sobieski fired a shot from near the blue line to equalize.
- 7:12 1st (RPI 2-1) | The third goal in a 90-second span put the home team on top for the first time. Matthew Buckley connected in close on a shot that sneaked inside the far post, capitalizing on feeds from Tyler Wallace and Thomas Klassek.
- 3:56 2nd (RPI 3-1) | After a flurry of three penalties in a minute-and-a-half early in the middle stanza, RPI stretched its lead to 3-1 with a 4-on-4 goal. Filip Sitar converted a one-timer from Wilson and Sobieski.
- 7:04 2nd (Miami 3-2) | Delic cut the deficit in half with a power-play tally, weaving in and out of the RPI defense after carrying the puck ahead from his own zone. Ryder Thompson and Matteo Drobac started the play at the far end of the rink and both picked up an assist.
- 11:26 2nd (Miami 3-3) | Miami struck again on a one-timer from Morozov to pull even at 3-3. Thompson blasted a long pass around the boards from behind his own net that got all the way to Delic at the offensive blue line. Delic then laid off a pass to Giampa, who relayed the feed to set up Morozov's second goal of the evening.
- 14:21 2nd (Miami 4-3) | The visitors used a flurry of chances in short succession to break through and score their third consecutive goal, taking the lead for good. After a pair of 2-on-1 chances were denied, Giampa tracked down the puck and found Helgeson all alone on the far side of the net for the go-ahead goal. Ethan Hay provided the second assist.
- 18:51 3rd (Miami 5-3) | Delic sealed the RedHawks' third-straight win with an empty-net goal, outracing the Engineers after Vladislav Lukashevich initially won the puck and Morozov sent it ahead for his linemate.
