OXFORD, Ohio – Goals from Carlie Servis and Paula Peña Martinez lead the Miami University field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Bucknell University on Friday evening. This puts the RedHawks on the right path, starting their season off 1-0. The Bison start their season 0-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

With just over six minutes remaining in the first quarter, goalkeeper Nicky Sjouken saved a penalty stroke attempt from Bucknell to keep the game tied 0-0.
In the final five minutes of the first quarter, the RedHawks had a phenomenal scoring opportunity, but weren't able to capitalize as the play resulted in a disallowed goal following two balls ending up on the playing surface.
At the end of the first quarter the game remained tied 0-0 after some competitive back-and-forth play.
Both teams worked hard throughout the second quarter to crack the other teams defense, but neither had any success as the first half ended even at 0-0.
Servis scored the first Miami goal of the season with just over half the third quarter remaining. Berta Mata brought the ball into the scoring circle and sent it towards the goal for Servis to tip in, putting the RedHawks ahead 1–0.
The third quarter ended without a change in score, despite five penalty corners being awarded between the two teams.
With barely 10 minutes of play remaining, Martinez got her first goal of the season during a penalty corner. She received the assist from Paula Navarro and Servis to double the RedHawk lead 2-0.
During their own penalty corner less than a minute later, the Bison cut the lead in half 2-1.
Despite this, the RedHawks held on to take the game 2-1.
