MASON, Ohio— Miami edged out Wright State Tuesday at the Nuxhall Classic in a 22-21 run derby after eight different RedHawks produced a total of 21 hits.
Ty Batusich and
Zach MacDonald each hit home runs during the contest to give Miami the advantage and help the Red and White overcome an early 8-0 hole.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wright State opened up the game with a walk from Gus Gregory and a two-run homer to left field from Sammy Sass. The Raiders then tripled to left center and utilized two RBI singles to extend their lead to four at the end of the first inning.
- The Raiders started the second inning in the same fashion, with leadoff batter Gregory walking and Sass hitting another home run to left center. Following suit, Jay Luikart homered to right center. A triple and a wild pitch gave Wright State their fourth run of the inning and doubled the Raiders' lead from four to eight runs.
- Ryland Zaborowski walked to start Miami's offense in the top of the third and advanced on an HBP by Batusich. MacDonald then loaded the bases with a single through to left field, setting up Ryan Novak to hit a two-run double to left center field.
- David Novak added one more with a single up the middle that scored MacDonald, making it 8-3 in the third.
- Dillon Baker singled to center in the top of the fourth and Batusich singled to put runners at the corners for Miami. MacDonald then stepped up to the plate and hit a homer over the left field wall on a 1-1 count to add three for Miami and cut the deficit to two.
- Sass hit his third home run of the day to lead off the fourth for Wright State on a shot down the left field line.
- Wright State took a walk before Nate Manley homered to left field in the bottom of the fifth to put two more runs on the board for the Raiders. WSU then recorded a double and a walk before scoring on a single to left field, extending the lead to 12-6.
- MacDonald singled with two outs in the top of the sixth and scored on a double to center field by Ryan Novak, who then advanced to third on a passed ball.
- Evan Appelwick walked to place runners at the corners. David Novak then singled to right to score Ryan Novak.
- Blake Buzzeo kept the two-out rally alive with a single through to left that scored Appelwick.
- Tyler Gordon walked to load the bases before Baker was hit by.a pitch to score David Novak. Zaborowski reached on an erroto make it 12-11 midway through the sixth.
- The Raiders loaded the bases with one out and scored one run on an RBI groundout. Wright State then singled to left center to bring in one more run and create a 14-11 lead.
- Ryan Novak walked with one out in the top of the seventh and advanced when Appelwick was hit by a pitch. David Novak then doubled down the left field line to bring one across.
- Appelwick then scored on a wild pitch and Blake Buzzeo walked. Gordon hit a sacrifice groundout to notch Miami's second run of the inning. Baker followed up with a single and Zaborowski doubled to left field to score Buzzeo and give Miami their first lead of the game at 15-14.
- Wright State's Ben Vore tied the game after seven innings with a solo home run to left field.
- Ryan Novak led off the eighth with a walk and advanced as Appelwick took his third walk of the day. David Novak then hit an RBI double which scored Ryan Novak and put Miami up 16-15.
- Still with no outs in the eighth, Buzzeo hit a sac fly to bring Appelwick home. Gordon then hit an RBI single and Baker singled to advance Gordon, who scored when Zaborowski doubled to center field.
- Batusich put the exclamation point on Miami's seven-run inning with a three-run homer to right field to pull Miami ahead 22-15.
- Sass put up a fourth home run of the day in the bottom of the eighth and teammates Vore and Boston Smith followed in his footsteps with a two-run homer and a solo blast, respectively. Two more runs came in on an RBI double and an RBI single to make it a one-run game after eight innings.
- Neither team scored in the ninth, as Miami held on in a thriller to earn a 22-21 win.
