'Hawks Take Down EMU 12-10 After Huge Eighth-Inning Homer

OXFORD, Ohio— Miami defeated Eastern Michigan on Friday in a whole-team effort that included hits from six different players and 10 total strikeouts from four different pitchers. Miami moves to 20-19 (12-10 MAC) with the victory, while Toledo falls to 13-27 (8-11 MAC) with the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Zach MacDonald was second to bat and walked for Miami. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, setting up Ty Batusich to drive him home with an RBI single to right center.
  • Ryland Zaborowski followed Batusich with a walk. Evan Appelwick then reached first on an error that loaded the bases. Miami's second run of the day then came home on an RBI groundout by Ryan Novak
  • David Novak doubled down the right field line, bringing home two RedHawks to make the score 4-0 after the first inning.
  • Lukas Galdoni pitched his third straight scoreless inning to hold the Eagles scoreless through three.
  • Zaborowski walked and advanced on a groundout to open the third for Miami. Ryan Novak singled to left center to score him and make it a 5-0 game.
  • Eastern Michigan walked and then homered to put two on the board for the Eagles in the top of the fourth. Another home run came two at bats later to make it a 5-3 ballgame.
  • The Eagles tacked on their third home run of the day in the fifth, reducing the deficit to one run.
  • Eastern Michigan started the sixth with an infield single and capitalized with a two-run blast to left field, their fourth homer of the day.
  • Continuing the base running, the Eagles took a walk and an HBP. They scored on a sacrifice fly to take a 7-5 lead in the middle of the sixth.
  • Tyler Gordon reached first base on a walk in the bottom of the sixth and then stole second. Dillon Baker came up with a big single into left field, and Gordon slid into home to bring back a one-run game.
  • MacDonald walked, pushing Baker to second. Batusich crushed a ball into the left field corner that bounced over the wall for a ground-rule double to score Baker and tie the game at seven.
  • The Eagles battled back with a leadoff triple in the top of the seventh and followed with a walk. Connor Preisel came out of the bullpen and struck out the next batter with three pitches. Miami then turned a key double play to render the leadoff triple empty and hold the Eagles scoreless in the seventh.
  • Appelwick led off for Miami in the bottom of the seventh with a single, and pinch runner Tré Keels stole second base. Ryan Novak then walked on a seven-pitch at-bat, and David Novak took an HBP to load the bases.
  • Gordon stepped up and singled to right field to score Keels, taking back the lead at 8-7. Baker then walked, sending another run across to stretch the lead to 9-7 with two innings remaining.
  • An unassisted double play on a line drive to second baseman Blake Buzzeo in the top of the eighth held the Eagles to just one run on three hits.
  • Keels reached on an error in the bottom of the eighth, and Ryan Novak walked. David Novak cleared the bags with a three-run Left Field Tavern home run to stretch Miami's lead to 12-8.
  • Throwing more than 90 miles per hour, Peyton Olejnik closed out the win for Miami, giving up two runs and managing three outs with a pop out, a strikeout, and a groundout. This secured the 12-10 win.
