OXFORD, Ohio— The RedHawks overtook Xavier 11-1 Tuesday after a sound effort on the mound and a walkoff home run in the eighth by Miami's
Zach MacDonald. Miami moves to 19-19 with the victory, and Xavier, who is ranked 30th in the RPI rankings, falls to 20-20.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Dillon Baker led off for Miami in the first and reached first base on an error by the Xavier shortstop. MacDonald singled to advance him to third and took second on his 12th stolen base of the season.
- Ty Batusich crushed a three-run home run to put Miami up 3-0.
- Leading off the bottom of the second, David Novak singled. Blake Buzzeo followed him with another single, and a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Gordon advanced the runners to second and third.
- A wild pitch allowed Novak to score and Buzzeo to advance to third. MacDonald then achieved his fourth multi-hit game in a row with an RBI single to make it a 5-0 game through two.
- Xavier took a walk with two outs in the top of the third and scored on a single to right field, cutting their deficit to four.
- MacDonald got on base for the third straight at bat after getting hit by a pitch. Batusich then walked to advance MacDonald, who then advanced again on a flyout by Ryland Zaborowski. A sacrifice fly by Evan Appelwick brought MacDonald home to move the lead back to five runs for Miami.
- David Novak led off the bottom of the sixth with a double down the left field line. A sacrifice bunt advanced him to third base, and Gordon took an eight-pitch walk to put runners at the corners.
- Baker pounded a single into left field to score Novak and make it a 7-1 game.
- Zaborowski walked to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Appelwick advanced him with a single on an empty count. Still with zero outs, Ryan Novak hit a bunt single to juice the bases.
- David Novak took an RBI HBP to drive in Miami's eighth run of the day, and Buzzeo outran the throw to first on a fielder's choice, while Appelwick came home to score.
- Miami breached double digits as Gordon reached on a fielder's choice that scored Ryan Novak. This made the game 10-1.
- MacDonald hit a walk off home run in the eighth, ending the game via a 10-run rule which was previously agreed upon by both teams' coaches.
- Tyler Ronevich was credited with the win. He pitched one inning in relief and allowed zero hits and two base runners.
- Pitchers Nick DeMonica, Ronevich, Nolan Hollis and Connor Preisel held the Musketeers to a combined six hits while facing 37 batters.
MIAMI GAME NOTES
- MacDonald went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs.
- David Novak went 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs.
- Appelwick went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run.
- Ronevich gave up zero hits and zero runs during one inning of relief. He struck out one batter during three at bats.
- Hollis threw two strikeouts during nine at bats and allowed two hits and no runs in 2.2 innings of relief.
