RedHawks Drop Game One vs BG Despite Washing Away Nine-Run Deficit

OXFORD, Ohio— Miami dropped its first game in MAC play Friday in a rainy 17-16 loss against Bowling Green. The RedHawks' efforts were highlighted by a 10-run sixth inning that erased a nine-run deficit. Miami moves to 5-7 on the year (0-1 MAC), while BGSU improves to 3-7 (1-0 MAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bowling Green struck first, taking a walk with the bases loaded in the second inning to grab a 1-0 lead. Then, a single into right center drove in two more runs before Ryland Zaborowski tagged out a runner at third to stop the bleeding at 3-0.
  • The Falcons scored again in the third, putting up an unearned run on a sacrifice fly and extending the lead to 4-0.
  • Bowling Green loaded the bases with zero outs in the fifth. A single scored two runners, a walk scored one, and an error scored one more before Miami was able to stop the rally with BGSU ahead 8-0.
  • Evan Appelwick put Miami on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. This marked his second round-tripper of the season.
  • An RBI triple in the sixth put the Falcons ahead 9-1 and an RBI double made it 10-1.
  • A single by Ryan Novak restarted the RedHawks' offensive efforts in the bottom of the sixth. David Novak sent him to home plate with an RBI single.
  • Tré Keels took a walk, pushing Novak to second base. Dillon Baker then singled to juice the bases.
  • Appelwick hit an RBI sac fly for Miami's third run of the game. Ty Batusich continued the rally with an RBI single to make it 10-4 Falcons.
  • Zach MacDonald cleared the bases with a double, raising the RedHawks' run count to seven.
  • Zaborowski and Ryan Novak walked, loading the bases once again for Miami with two outs. David Novak took a HBP to score MacDonald and make it 10-8.
  • Keels drilled a ball to the center field wall, which was bobbled and dropped by the Bowling Green outfielder. That tacked on three unearned runs and gave the RedHawks their first lead of the game at 11-10.
  • After a lengthy rain delay, the teams returned to play and Appelwick led off the seventh with a walk. Garrison Barile copied him on the next at-bat. Batusich then hit an RBI single, stretching Miami's lead to two.
  • Continuing Miami's seventh-inning offense, MacDonald walked to load the bases with zero outs. A sacrifice fly by Ryland Zaborowski scored Barile.
  • Ryan Novak then hit a double that bounced past the outfielder to the left field wall and scored two more runners. The RedHawks finished the inning up 15-10.
  • The Falcons hit a lead-off double to start the eighth and a quartet of singles plus an error drove in four runs, with the visitors reclaiming the lead at 16-15.
  • Dillon Baker struck back in the bottom of the eighth, hammering a solo home run over the left field wall and tying the game at 16 apiece.
  • Bowling Green came up with an RBI double in the ninth to claim a 17-16 win.
