RedHawks Defeat CMU in Game One for First MAC Win

OXFORD, Ohio— The RedHawks grabbed their first victory in Mid-American Conference play Friday in a 3-2 victory over the Central Michigan Chippewas. All three of Miami's runs came in the ninth, including a walk-off single by catcher David Novak.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Central Michigan hit a bloop single to center field in the first, and the runner advanced to third on a single through the right side. A third single handed the Chippewas their first run of the game, putting them up 1-0 before Miami managed to get out of the inning.
  • A single to center field, a double to left field and a walk for the Chippewas loaded the bases with zero outs in the top of the sixth. Coming in relief, Peyton Olejnik pitched three outs, including two strikeouts, limiting Central Michigan to one run on a fielder's choice and holding the score to 2-0.
  • Ryland Zaborowski attempted to kickstart the offense in the bottom of the eighth with a single and David Novak kept the effort alive, singling through to left field. Zaborowski then advanced on a wild pitch, putting runners at the corners for Miami. Anthony Zarlingo walked to load up the bases for Miami with two outs, but Miami's attempted rally was then cut short with a full count strikeout.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, pinch hitter Justin Gorski turned three on a shot to the right field corner. Tyler Gordon then outran the throw to record a single and score Gorski, pulling Miami within one.
  • Batusich singled through to right field, putting Gordon at third base. Zach MacDonald hit a short bunt and Gordon outran the tag, sliding into home plate and receiving the safe ruling. Replay confirmed the call and Miami tied the ballgame with one out in the ninth.
  • Novak stepped up to the plate and hit a walk-off single up the middle on the first pitch of the at bat to give Miami its first win in MAC play.

MIAMI GAME NOTES

  • Novak went 2-for-5 with one RBI.
  • Zaborowski went 2-for-3 with one BB.
