Falcons Sweep RedHawks in 12-inning Game Three

Oxford, Ohio— Miami fell to Bowling Green in 12 innings Sunday 14-10 after a valiant comeback effort which included a four-run eighth inning. Miami moves to 5-9 (0-3 MAC) on the year, while BGSU improves to 5-7 (3-0 MAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bowling Green sent five across in the first inning on three hits and three Miami errors.
  • A two-run home run by Bowling Green's Gavin Ganun in the third pushed the score to 7-0 Falcons.
  • Ganun hit his second homer of the day in the fifth inning, tacking two onto the Falcons lead to put them up 9-0.
  • Anthony Zarlingo walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth and Zach MacDonald took an HBP. Both runners advanced on a passed ball, setting up Ryland Zaborowski to smash a two-RBI double down the left field line. This marked Miami's first hit of the day.
  • Dillon Baker hit an RBI single to push the score to 9-3 heading into the sixth.
  • Tré Keels managed a nine pitch at bat that resulted in a walk. Following suit, Zarlingo took an eight pitch at bat and a walk. MacDonald recorded the RedHawks' third walk of the inning to juice the bases, but a foul pop that was caught marked the third out and left all three stranded.
  • In the seventh, Baker singled and was followed by Ryan Novak, who hit an RBI double and cut the Bowling Green lead to five.
  • Ty Batusich woke the RedHawk offense once again in the bottom of the eighth with a walk. MacDonald then singled and Zaborowski walked to load the bases with zero outs. Ryan Novak hit a ball that went just just above the center fielder's glove, causing him to make an error. Three RedHawks came home on the play, cutting the score deficit to two runs.
  • On the next at bat, Baker outran the throw for an infield single and advanced Ryan Novak to third. David Novak followed with a sacrifice fly that sent Baker to home plate and made the score 9-8 heading into the ninth inning.
  • Bowling Green walked home in the top of the ninth, adding an insurance run and making the score 10-8.
  • Zarlingo started the RedHawks' ninth inning rally with a double to the right-center wall and MacDonald took an HBP on the shoulder to give the RedHawks a second baserunner. Ryan Novak hit a ground ball through to left field, advancing on the throw, sending the tying run to third base, and pulling Miami within one.
  • Baker hit a short shot towards third base. He reached on a fielder's choice, and an interference call negated all outs. This allowed Zarlingo to score and tied the game at 10 apiece.
  • David Novak took an HBP and loaded the bases, but a strikeout stopped the rally at a 10-10 score and sent the game to extras.
  • The RedHawks caught a runner stealing to notch the third out of the inning and hold Bowling Green scoreless in the 10th. Miami was scoreless in the bottom of the inning as well, pushing on to inning number 11.
  • With Carson Byers still on the mound, the RedHawks held BG to another scoreless inning.
  • Ryan Novak walked with two outs in the 11th. Baker then singled, advancing Novak to second. David Novak reached first on an error, loading the bases, but a flyout stopped the rally and made a 12th inning necessary.
  • Bowling Green converted a walk and a single into one run when Falcon DJ Newman singled to center field to take an 11-10 lead. Another walk loaded the bases and a single by Leighton Banjoff scored two more. One last run scored on a fielder's choice to put the score at 14-10.
  • The RedHawks recorded three straight outs in the bottom of the 12th, falling short and taking a loss.
