Miami Gets 15-8 Comeback Win over Elon

ELON, NC – A pair of grand slams from Kate Kobayashi and Jenna Golembiewski helped the Miami University softball team to a 15-8 come from behind win over Elon University on Friday evening. This puts the RedHawks at 2-0 on the season and drops Elon to 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Golembiewski hit a double in the top of the second inning to score Chloe Parks, who had originally reached on a walk. The RedHawks led 1-0.
  • Elon tied it up 1-1 in the bottom of the first when a bases-loaded walk caused one to score.
  • An RBI single and another bases-loaded walk for the Phoenix put them ahead 3-1 in that same inning. Three more then came in on a pair of errors, making it 6-1.
  • A wild pitch resulting in the deficit being pushed to 7-1 continued the RedHawks' rough inning.
  • In the top of the fourth Reagan Bartholomew singled to left field and earned an RBI when Parks crossed the plate to make it a 7-2 game.
  • Later in that same inning Allie Cummins singled up the middle that had Bartholomew and Golembiewski scoring to shorten the gap to 7-4.
  • Kobayashi took the lead back for the RedHawks with one swing of the bat in the top of the fifth, hitting a grand slam over the right-field fence to also score Maddi Banks, Sami Bewick, and Bartholomew to make it 8-7.
  • A Phoenix pinch hitter in the bottom of the fifth scored one on an RBI single to tie the game up 8-8.
  • In the top of the seventh Banks scored on a wild pitch and Holly Blaska and Karli Spaid both scored on an RBI single from Bewick to again give the RedHawks a lead, 11-8.
  • Golembiewski wasn't comfortable with that lead and shot a grand slam to left field to also score Shelby Kunkel, Logan Mueller, and Spaid. The gap stretched to 15-8, which held through the remainder of the game

NOTES:
  • The RedHawks totaled 15 hits and 14 RBI.
  • Golembiewski and Kobayashi each had important grand slams. Golembiewski also had a double, the only other extra base hit recorded by Miami in the matchup.
  • Cummins and Bewick recorded two RBI each.
  • Madilyn Reeves got her first career start in the circle and recorded three strikeouts.
  • Ashley Hitchcock got her first appearance on the mound as a RedHawk, going 5.2 innings with five strikeouts to earn the win.
