RedHawks Secure Exhibition in Four Sets Against Morehead State

OXFORD, Ohio—The Miami University volleyball team secured a victory in an exhibition match against Morehead State University Saturday afternoon at Millett Hall. The RedHawks captured the first two sets, before closing out the match in the fourth set. In the end, each team agreed to play a fifth set.

The RedHawks open the 2023 season by traveling to Memphis for the Memphis Invitational Aug. 25-26. Miami faces Samford in the season opener at 11 a.m. ET on Friday, Aug. 25. The RedHawks take on Alcorn State that same day at 4 p.m. ET before closing out the tournament Saturday afternoon against Memphis at 2 p.m. ET.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The first set started off very close, Miami leading 6-5. A combination of service aces and kills propelled the RedHawks to a 12-5 lead after scoring six unanswered points. Miami never looked back, closing out the set 25-9. The Red and White accumulated six service aces and 11 kills in the set.
- Morehead State took an early 3-1 lead in the second set, but Miami overcame the deficit after Chelsea Williams recorded a kill to put the RedHawks ahead 4-3. The Eagles looked to close out a hard-fought set at 23-20, but Miami answered with three consecutive kills to edge Morehead State 26-24. No team led by more than three points the entire second set.
- The Red and White trailed 12-4 at the midpoint of the third set. Despite a tough effort from Miami, Morehead State would take the set 25-12.
- A collection of kills from Ellie Hanson and Williams gave Miami a 12-9 lead halfway through the fourth set. A pair of kills from Brooke Jackson and a Maggie McCrary service ace helped Miami secure the match at 25-23.
- Each team decided to play an extra set of action and Morehead State went on to finish the extra fifth set 15-7.
NOTES:
- Hayden Hicks recorded a game-high in both service aces (3) and assists (36).
- Gentry Warrick recorded a team-high three blocks.
- Freshman Williams led Miami with 11 kills.
- Emily Morgan led the RedHawks with 21 digs.
