Miami Opens Postseason at No. 3 Denver
3/8/2023 2:50:00 PM | Hockey
Miami heads to Denver to begin postseason play against the No. 3/3 Pioneers in a best-of-three series this weekend at Magness Arena. The defending national champs captured the Penrose Cup again while the RedHawks are the eighth-seeded team in the NCHC bracket. Miami dropped a pair of home games to then-No. 8 Western Michigan last week (5-0 and 5-4 [OT]), while Denver took two games from in-state rival Colorado College.
The quarterfinal series will be streamed on NCHC.tv, with puck drop set for 9 p.m. ET Friday, March 10 and radio coverage on WMOH 1450 AM The Ticket (Hamilton, Ohio). Saturday night's game will start at 8 p.m. ET and air on WKBV 1490 AM (Richmond, Ind.). Sunday's game, if necessary, would start at 8 p.m. ET on WMOH. Greg Waddell will handle the radio play-by-play.
Miami enters postseason play looking for its third conference tournament championship in program history. The RedHawks won the NCHC tournament in 2015 and the CCHA tournament in 2011. With a series victory this weekend, the Red and White could advance to the Frozen Faceoff for the first time since winning the event in 2015.
Denver leads the all-time series against Miami 30-13-3 and owns 10 consecutive wins over the RedHawks (including a series victory in last season's NCHC quarterfinal matchup). The RedHawks enter the weekend looking for their first victory over the Pioneers since Dec. 17, 2020 and first win in Magness Arena since Feb. 22, 2019.
Matthew Barbolini leads Miami offensively in both goals (10) and assists (13). Four players are tied for second on the team in points: Joe Cassetti (9-5-14), John Waldron (9-5-14), Red Savage (7-7-14) and PJ Fletcher (4-10-14). Ludvig Persson is 8-17-4 in goal this year with a 3.46 GAA and .897 save percentage.
Head coach Chris Bergeron and senior captain Jack Clement met with the media this week to preview the upcoming matchup against the Pioneers.
