Miami Falls 9-7 to WSU

OXFORD, Ohio-- The Miami University baseball team dropped a non-conference game to Wright State Wednesday afternoon by the score of 9-7. The RedHawks' record slips to 4-18 (2-4 MAC), while WSU evens its season mark at 10-10 (2-1 Horizon).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • WSU scored four runs in the first inning, but Miami came back with five in the second to take the lead. A Brian Zapp bases-loaded single off the center-field fence got the RedHawks on the board, and Miami added two runs later in the inning on an error by the Raiders' shortstop. Evan Appelwick followed with an RBI sacrifice bunt to tie the game, and back-to-back singles by Cooper Weiss and Ryland Zaborowski gave the Red and White a 5-4 advantage.
  • Miami scored again in the third to make it 6-4. After a ground-rule double to left by David Novak with one out, Zapp beat out an infield single to put runners at the corners. Dillon Baker laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Novak and stretch Miami's lead to two.
  • WSU tied the game in the fifth and took the lead for good with one run in the sixth and two in the eighth. Miami concluded the scoring with a run in the ninth inning and put the tying run on base, but the RedHawks' attempted rally fell short at 9-7.

NOTES
  • Lester finished 2-for-5 with two doubles.
  • Zapp and Weiss also produced multi-hit games for Miami.
  • Starting pitcher Carson Byers recorded a career-high seven strikeouts in 5.0 IP.
  • Dom Magliocca provided a pinch-hit double in his only plate appearance for his first extra-base hit of the season.
