CHARLOTTE, N.C.– On Friday afternoon, the Miami University softball team opened its season with a 5-4 loss against the University of South Carolina and a 5-3 loss against UNC Charlotte, despite out-hitting both teams.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
- Riley Coyne got the RedHawks started in the second inning with a home run to take an early 1-0 lead.
- In the bottom of the fourth, the Gamecocks put two runs on the board with a single and a double, taking the lead 2-1.
- The RedHawks did not wait long to answer. In the top of the fifth, Jenna Golembiewski homered, and Karli Spaid scored on an RBI by Holly Blaska, taking back the lead, 3-2.
- After stealing home in the bottom of the fifth, the Gamecocks tied the game 3-3.
- Two more from South Carolina scored on a double in that inning, granting them a 5-3 lead.
- Kate Kobayashi homered in the top of the sixth, shortening the Gamecocks' lead to 5-4, though the RedHawks were ultimately unable to overcome the deficit.
NOTES:
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
- In the bottom of the first, the 49ers took a 2-0 lead on a two-run homer.
- Allie Cummins and Kobayashi tied up the game in the top of the fourth on Cummins' two-run blast.
- Adriana Barlow made it back-to-back home runs to give the RedHawks a 3-2 lead.
- A two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth gave the lead back to the 49ers by a score of 4-3.
- After an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, the 49ers pushed their lead to 5-3, which the RedHawks were unable to overcome.
NOTES:
- Barlow and Kobayashi went 2-3 at the plate.
- Taylor Turner got the start in the circle, with Laurelai DePew coming on to pitch the sixth inning.
UP NEXT: On Saturday, Feb. 11, the RedHawks will take on East Tennessee State University at 10 a.m. and Campbell University at 3 p.m. in Charlotte, N.C.
