Baseball Beats Indiana 9-7

OXFORD, Ohio-- The Miami University baseball team picked up a 9-7 win over the Indiana University Hoosiers Tuesday night. The RedHawks improve to 15-21 (10-13 MAC) while the Hoosiers drop to 13-22 (2-7 Big Ten).
 
The RedHawks' bats led the way, scoring seven runs in the first inning. Brady McLean, Luke Leverton and Patrick Mastrian IV combined for 4.2 strong innings out of the bullpen.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the bottom of the first, trailing 3-0, Benji Brokemond drew a lead-off walk. The following at-bat, Zach MacDonald ripped a double down the right-field line, scoring Brokemond. Later in the inning, Brian Zapp singled, driving in MacDonald. Parker Lester singled, then Zapp and Lester stole second and third respectively, putting runners on second and third. David Novak then singled up the middle, driving in Lester and Zapp. JJ Woolwine then singled, putting two runners on. Stephen Krause hammered a double, driving in Novak. Later in the inning Brokemond tripled to right field, driving in Woolwine and Krause.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, leading 7-5, Brokemond reached base on a bunt single, followed by a MacDonald walk. After Brokemond and MacDonald each stole a base, Brokemond scored and MacDonald advanced to third on a wild pitch. Zapp later drove in MacDonald, extending the lead to 9-5.
 
Miami Game Notes:
  • Brokemond went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored, two RBI, a stolen base and a walk.
  • MacDonald reached base three times with a double, two runs scored and a steal.
  • Zapp went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, two RBI and a stolen base.
  • Michael Spinozzi picked up his first win of the season on the mound.
  • Leverton threw 1.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
  • McLean threw 2.1 innings out of the bullpen, striking out five batters.
 
What's Next:
            The RedHawks resume conference play with a four-game set at Kent State this weekend. First pitch on Friday, April 22 is set for 6 p.m. in Kent, Ohio.
