RedHawks Rally Past No. 18 Omaha

OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University hockey team rallied from deficits of 1-0, 3-1, and 4-3 to take down the No. 18 Omaha Mavericks 5-4 on Friday in front of a national television audience. Hampus Rydqvist scored the game-winning goal with 4:39 remaining for the RedHawks (5-20-2, 2-14-1 NCHC), who defeated UNO (17-12-0, 7-10-0 NCHC) for the second time this season. Ludvig Persson made 33 saves, including several of the highlight-reel variety, to pick up the win in goal for Miami. Chase Gresock had three points, all assists, to lead the Miami offensive attack.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • 3:43 1st (Omaha 1-0) | Omaha started the scoring less than four minutes into the game. The Mavericks moved into the RedHawks' zone on a power play opportunity, gaining touches from Brannon McManus and Taylor Ward. Brandon Scanlin saw an opening and hit the back of the net from close to the blue line to give Omaha a 1-0 lead.
  • 4:12 1st (Miami 1-1) | Miami responded just 29 seconds later to tie things up. Picking up the faceoff and moving into Omaha's zone, Matt Barry fired a shot off the wall that was picked up by Gresock. Although Gresock's attempt was deflected by Omaha goaltender Isaiah Saville, Dylan Moulton finished off the rebound to get the RedHawks on the board.
  • 3:56 2nd (Omaha 2-1) | Omaha went back on top early in the second period. A shot from Matt Miller bounced off the top of the net and into the crease, creating a struggle for control. Jimmy Glynn worked his way in and tipped the puck past Persson, making it 2-1.
  • 7:36 2nd (Omaha 3-1) | Omaha doubled its lead later in the period, capitalizing on a 4-on-3 power play to take the puck to Miami's zone. Ward and Scanlin set up Kevin Conley to give UNO a 3-1 lead.
  • 10:54 2nd (Miami 3-2) | Two more penalties, this time both against Omaha, turned the tables and let Miami close the scoring gap. During a 5-on-3 power play, PJ Fletcher set up Derek Daschke for a pass across to Ryan Savage, who waited just long enough to find an opening and shoot the puck in to pull the Red and White within one.
  • 11:31 2nd (Miami 3-3) | 37 seconds later, the RedHawks struck again. Gresock fed Rydqvist, who found Joe Cassetti in close. Cassetti stayed with the play and tipped the puck just enough for it to eventually slide past Saville.
  • 7:19 3rd (Omaha 4-3) | Omaha took another lead with a third-period power play goal. Chayse Primeau moved the puck to Ward, who sent it toward the net to be deflected by Persson. McManus picked up the rebound and took it to the net, putting the Mavericks up 4-3.
  • 12:41 3rd (Miami 4-4) | The RedHawks responded with a power play goal of their own shortly after. After Miami moved the puck into Omaha's zone, Gresock slid it over to Daschke, who stopped it with his skate before scooping it up and into the net for the equalizer.
  • 15:21 3rd (Miami 5-4) | Miami's game-winning goal came only seconds after a power play expired. Cassetti and Barry combined to create an opportunity for Rydqvist, whose blast gave the RedHawks their only lead of the game, but one that would stand up.

GAME NOTES:
  • The RedHawks finished 3-7 on the power play, while Omaha went 3-5.
  • Barry, Cassetti and Rydqvist matched their career highs with two points apiece.
  • The RedHawks had 20 shots on goal in the second period, the highest total Miami has recorded in any period this season.
  • In his first action since Jan. 7, Gresock set a season high for points and plus-minus and also recorded a game-high seven shots on goal.
