RedHawks Top Calumet College 85-49

OXFORD, Ohio— The Miami University men's basketball team defeated Calumet College 85-49 Sunday afternoon at Millett Hall. Morgan Safford led the RedHawks (4-5) with 17 points, while Anderson Mirambeaux and Mekhi Lairy added 15 points each. Billy Smith chipped in 13 as well. Noel Mpie led the Crimson Wave (1-8) with 11 points.

 HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The RedHawks took an early lead at 7-0 after Morgan Safford recorded a layup and buried a shot from behind the arc. Shortly after, Calumet came within four points at 10-6. Miami followed this by going on an 11-0 run to take a double-digit lead at 21-6 with 12:33 left in the first half.
  • Miami maintained their lead at 29-11 with 8:29 on the game clock. The Crimson Wave responded by going on a 7-0 run to come within 11 points. The RedHawks stayed resilient, scoring 14 straight points of their own. From 5:41 to 3:43, Mirambeaux poured in seven points for the Red and White. Miami took their largest lead of the half at 43-17 with 2:07 left before intermission.
  • Lairy hit a jumper to take the opening points of the second half. Smith and Eli Yofan then knocked down back-to-back three point field goals to stretch the lead to 55-25. Calumet made a strong push, but Smith proceeded to score two more threes to bring the score to 61-41 with 11:38 left to play.
  • From 7:13 to 4:35, Lairy added seven points to his total, helping Miami secure the game. The Red and White finished the competition on an 8-0 run to win 85-49.
NOTES
  • Javin Etzler made his season debut.
  • Miami tied its season-high of 23 assists.
  • Safford tied his career-high of four steals.
  • For the second time this season, Miami shot 50% or higher from the three-point line.
  • Yofan had a career-high and team-high seven rebounds.
