OXFORD, Ohio – On Saturday afternoon the Miami University field hockey team took down Appalachian State University 3-1 in the Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship. The win advances the RedHawks to the NCAA Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- With less than four minutes remaining in the first quarter, the RedHawks struck first. Paula Peña Martinez scored, taking a 1-0 lead for Miami. She was assisted by Luli Rosso.
- The RedHawks held their 1-0 lead through the end of the first quarter.
- Through a back-and-forth second quarter the RedHawks successfully defended eight penalty corners and held their 1-0 lead through the end of the half.
- Under three minutes into the third quarter, Peña Martinez scored again, doubling the RedHawks' lead to 2-0. She was again assisted by Rosso.
- Miami held the 2-0 lead through the end of the quarter.
- With just under 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Peña Martinez scored again, earning herself a hat trick and giving the RedHawks a 3-0 lead.
- The Mountaineers grabbed a goal with just over six minutes left in the quarter, shortening their deficit to 3-1.
- The RedHawks held their lead through the end of the competition, winning 3-1. This is Miami's fifth consecutive MAC Tournament Championship.
- Named to the MAC All-Tournament Team were Peña Martinez, Rosso, Jenna Kirby and Macy McHale. Kirby was also named the MAC All-Tournament MVP.
