CLEVELAND, Ohio– The RedHawks swept the Mid-American Conference weekly field hockey awards for the week of Oct. 19 after Malena Sabez, Kylie Coughlin, and Nicky Sjouken were named the Offensive Player, Defensive Player, and Goalkeeper of the Week, respectively.
The honors came after Miami picked up two key wins: a Friday conference win over Kent State, 5-0, and a 2-1 comeback win over Big Ten opponent Michigan on Sunday.
Sabez netted three total goals this weekend, including the game-winner against Kent State and the equalizer against Michigan. Her goals bring her season total to 13, which ranks 14th in the nation and 4th in the MAC. She also took 11 of the RedHawks' 32 shots, adding to her team-leading total of 86 this season and ranking her first in the MAC in shots per game.
Coughlin organized the defense for Miami, serving as the primary inserter on the RedHawks' 20 penalty corners and notching four assists, two in each game. Her defensive unit held opponents to just one goal, six corners, and 12 shots, with just six shots coming from the field. Coughlin now ranks fifth in the country (second in the MAC) in assists per game and third nationally in total assists with 14.
Sjouken started in net against Kent State and earned a pair of saves on Friday to post another clean sheet in the shutout victory. Sjouken's shutout performance led to a weekend with just one goal and no field goals allowed by the RedHawks.
The RedHawks return to action this Friday, Oct. 30 to wrap up regular season play at Central Michigan before returning home to host the MAC Championship beginning Nov. 4.
