RedHawks Advance in NCAA Tournament with 7-1 Victory over Rider

EVANSTON, Ill. – On Wednesday afternoon the Miami University field hockey team downed Rider University 7-1 in the Opening Round of the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament. The win advances the RedHawks to the First Round of the NCAA Tournament to face No. 2 Northwestern University.

The RedHawks will face No. 2 Northwestern University in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, Nov. 11 at 1:00 p.m. in Evanston, Ill.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- During a penalty corner about halfway through the first quarter, the RedHawks struck first with a goal by Katherine Groff, taking the 1-0 lead for the RedHawks. She was assisted by Luli Rosso.
- During another penalty corner with less than five minutes remaining in the quarter, Claudia Negrete Garcia scored, increasing the RedHawks' lead to 2-0. She was assisted by Macy McHale and Berta Mata
- The RedHawks held their lead through the end of the first quarter.
- Just over three minutes into the second quarter, the RedHawks scored again during a penalty corner. This time the goal was scored by Rosso, bumping the RedHawks' lead to 3-0.
- With under five minutes remaining in the quarter Negrete Garica scored on a penalty stroke, granting Miami a 4-0 lead.
- Negrete Garcia did not wait long to score again. With just over four minutes remaining in the quarter, she scored on Miami's ninth penalty corner of the game, taking a 5-0 lead.
- The first half ended with a strong offensive performance by the RedHawks, who led the competition 5-0 at this point.
- Under five minutes into the third quarter the RedHawks struck again, this time by Berta Mata, giving Miami a 6-0 lead.
- With just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter, Abby Moore scored her first career goal, raising the RedHawks' lead to 7-0. The RedHawks held this lead through the end of the quarter
- During a penalty corner with just over eight minutes left in the final quarter, The Broncs scored, shortening the deficit to 7-1.
- The win is Miami field hockey's largest margin of victory and the program's high for goals in a NCAA tournament.
