ON TAP: The Miami University women's basketball team hosts Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m.
NEW YEAR, NEW RESULTS: The RedHawks are 6-10 on the year, already surpassing last year's win total (went 4-20 last season). Miami is 2-5 in conference play after going 3-17 a year ago.
ROAD WARRIORS: Prior to EMU, the RedHawks were on the road for two games in a three-day span. Following Saturday's action, the RedHawks once again hit the road for three consecutive contests from Feb. 2-7.
SHOOTING FOR A CURE: On Saturday the RedHawks will be wearing special warm ups for "Shooting for a Cure for ALS" in honor of all people who are affected by ALS. Â Shooting for a Cure is very close to the women's basketball program. Senior Vannessa Garrelts' father, Steve Garrelts, was diagnosed with ALS in April of 2014 and passed away on March 24, 2020.Â
REDHAWKS DROPPED 70-59 DECISION AT CMU: Â The Miami University women's basketball team dropped a 70-59 decision on Wednesday evening to the Central Michigan Chippewas. Peyton Scott led the RedHawks with 23 points, while Edyn Battle chipped in with 10.
BALANCING ACT: While Peyton Scott (18.0) is getting a majority of the offensive attention, Miami has a total of eight players averaging at least 3.7 points per game this season. Last year, just four RedHawks averaged over 4.0 points per game.
NEW FACES, NEW PLACES: Miami has six additions to the RedHawks in 2021-22 that are contributing numbers to Miami's success. In all, Ivy Wolf, Maddi Cluse, Edyn Battle, Tajah Foster-Walker, Jordan Tuff and Katey Richason are combining for 35.1 points and 18.1 rebounds per game.
ABOUT EASTERN MICHIGAN: The Eagles are 4-11 on the year and 1-7 in MAC play, which includes six-straight conference losses. Areanna Combs leads the way at 17.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.
SERIES WITH THE EAGLES: This will be the 62nd meeting between the two schools with Miami holding a 41-20 all-time advantage despite the Eagles winning the past two contests. Miami's last home win versus EMU was back on Feb. 6, 2019.
LIKE A FINE WINE: No easy way to put it, but the RedHawks have struggled offensively in the first half this season, averaging 28.5 points in the first 20 minutes of action. As the game goes on, the offense improves. The RedHawks average 38.3 points per game in the second half and have outscored their opponents 326-298 in the fourth quarter.
15-FOOT GIMMIE: Who wouldn't want a 15-foot gimmie putt in a round of golf? Well, over the past five contests the free throw line has nearly been a gimmie for the Red and White. After opening the season 83-125 (.664) from the foul line, Miami has converted on 48-of-57 (.842) over the past five contests. Peyton Scott (28-29) and Edyn Battle (10-11) have led the way from the foul line during that stretch.
GREAT SCOTT: Junior guard Peyton Scott has accomplished more than most through just over 2+ years of play.
• Has scored 1,187 points and ranks 19th all-time on Miami's scoring list.
• She currently ranks sixth in the MAC in scoring (18.3), 18th in rebounding (6.1), ninth in assists (4.1) and sixth in steals (1.9).
• Has made 31 of her last 32 free throw attempts
• Last season alone, she scored 30-plus points in five different games, including 39 versus Ball State, a new Millett Hall record.
• She had a stretch last season from Feb. 3-Feb. 13 in which she scored 30-plus points in four straight games, the first RedHawk in school history to accomplish such a feat.
• In her last 45 contests, Scott has more 30 point games (5) then under 10 point games (3).
• She has scored in double figures in 38 of her last 40 contests.
REMEMBER ME?: From Jan. 12 through Jan. 22 Peyton Scott hit a rough patch offensively, averaging "just" 13.8 points per contest, and finishing below her season average in all four games. Well, Scott has averaged 23.0 points per game over her last two contests to get right back on track.
GOING TO BATTLE: The RedHawks have leaned heavily on Edyn Battle lately. After surpassing 10-plus points just once in her first six games, Battle has scored in double figures in seven of her last 10 contests.
