Volleyball Hosts Akron Thursday and Friday

THIS WEEKEND: The RedHawks continue Mid-American Conference play as they return to Millett Hall to host Akron in a two-match series to kick off the Family Weekend festivities in Oxford. The RedHawks and Zips square off at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30 and at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1. Fans may use their Oct. 2 Miami football ticket to receive FREE admission to Friday's volleyball match. Show your Oct. 2 football ticket at the Millett Hall Ticket Office for your free volleyball ticket. Both teams are searching for their first MAC wins after going 0-2 last weekend. 

ABOUT AKRON & THE SERIES WITH THE ZIPS: Akron enters the weekend with a 6-8 record and an 0-2 MAC mark. The Zips are coming off a pair of losses to Bowling Green over the weekend. The RedHawks own a 48-16 lead in the series with the Zips and won the last meeting between the teams on Jan. 29, 2021 in five sets in Akron. Miami dropped the previous match on Jan. 28 in five sets to the Zips at James A. Rhodes Arena. The Zips won the last meeting in Oxford on Oct. 5, 2019, 3-0. The RedHawks' last win against Akron in Millett Hall was on Oct. 27, 2018, 3-0.

TELEVISION: Both matches against the Zips will be streamed on ESPN+ or ESPN3.

UP NEXT: The RedHawks continue a four-match home stretch when they host Western Michigan at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8 and Northern Illinois at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9. Friday's match will be streamed on ESPN3/+, while Saturday's match will be streamed on MiamiRedHawks.com All-Access.

HARPER CLOSING IN ON 1,000 DIGS: With 977 career digs, senior Gaby Harper is closing in on becoming the 18th player in program history to reach 1,000 career digs and needs just 23 more to achieve the feat. Harper also owns 843 career kills entering the weekend.

ODDS 'N ENDS:
  • Sophomore Taylor Nomanson ranks sixth among MAC leaders in digs (4.29 per set), and also ties for sixth among MAC leaders in service aces (0.33). She has served up eight this season.
  • Twice this season junior Jacquelyn Krumnauer has served up three aces in a match, recording three against Austin Peay in the season opener and three against Cincinnati in the RedHawks' final non-conference match. Krumnauer also notched two service aces at Buffalo on Sept. 24. All eight of her service aces have come in three matches.
  • Senior Gaby Harper has played in 93 career matches and is poised to eclipse the 100-match mark in the last third of the season.
  • Freshman Brooke Cirigliano leads Miami with 35 blocks this season and has recorded at least one block in each of the RedHawks' 12 matches. She has posted nine multi-block matches, including a six-block effort against Howard on Sept. 4.
  • Miami boasts seven newcomers on its 2021 roster, comprising 41% of the MU roster.

McCRARY AND CIRIGLIANO NAMED TO MIAMI/BEST WESTERN ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Sophomore Maggie McCrary and freshman Brooke Cirigliano were named to the Miami/Best Western All-Tournament team. This was the first all-tournament team honor for either RedHawk. 

RIEMERSMA AND NOMANSON NAMED TO DUKE ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Senior Sophie Riemersma and sophomore Taylor Nomanson were named to the Duke Invitational All-Tournament Team. This was the second-straight all-tournament team honor for Riemersma and the first of her career for Nomanson.

ECLIPSING 750 CAREER WINS: With a 3-0 win versus Buffalo on Jan. 22, 2021, Miami head coach Carolyn Condit posted her 750th career win. Condit owns a 764-576 career record entering her 42nd season as a head coach. Condit's 764 total victories are tied for eighth among active NCAA Division I coaches, and tied for 24th all-time. Owning more victories than any coach in the history of the Miami Athletic Department, Condit holds a 665-498 record and is in her 38th season in charge of the Red and White. Condit is the only volleyball coach in the history of the Mid-American Conference to win over 300 league matches, holding a conference mark of 366-218.
