Miami Volleyball Heads to Marshall Invite This Weekend

THIS WEEKEND: Miami opens the 2021 campaign with a trip to the Marshall Invitational in Huntington, W.Va. Aug. 27-28. The RedHawks face Austin Peay in the season opener at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27 before facing Alabama at 10 a.m. and host Marshall at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28. Friday's match will be the 1,500th in program history for the RedHawks who own an all-time record of 881-617-1. Miami is a combined 20-6 against this weekend's field.
ABOUT AUSTIN PEAY & SERIES WITH THE GOVERNORS: Austin Peay returns 12 players from a squad that posted a 9-5 mark in the Ohio Valley Conference last season. This is the second meeting with the Governors with Miami posting a 3-0 win at the Alabama Tournament on Sept. 2, 1995.Â
ABOUT ALABAMA & THE SERIES WITH THE CRIMSON TIDE: Alabama returns nine players from a squad that posted a 7-15 record in the Southeastern Conference a season ago. This is the sixth meeting between the teams with Miami owning a 5-0 lead in the series. Miami notched a 3-2 win at the St. Louis Tournament on Aug. 29, 2009 in the last meeting between the teams. MU is 2-0 in neutral-site matches against Alabama.
ABOUT MARSHALL & THE SERIES WITH THE THUNDERING HERD: Marshall returns 11 players from a team that recorded a 10-5 record last season, primarily in Conference USA action. Miami is 14-6 in the series with the Thundering Herd but has lost the last two meetings. Marshall posted a 3-2 win on Aug. 25, 2012 in the Thundering Herd Invitational in the last meeting. Miami's last win in the series came on Aug. 29, 2005, 3-0, in the RedHawks' season opener in Oxford.Â
TELEVISION: Miami's 6 p.m. Saturday match against Marshall will be aired on ESPN+.
UP NEXT: The RedHawks continue a road stretch to start the season when they travel to Durham, N.C. for the Duke Invitational Sept. 3-4. Miami will face the College of Charleston at 12 p.m. and host Duke at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3 before taking on Howard at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4. The RedHawks then return home to host the Miami/Best Western Invitational Sept. 10-11 in the first home matches of the season for Miami.
GREAT RETURNS: Of its 17-player roster, Miami returns 10 RedHawks from the 2020-21 roster. Seniors Gaby Harper, Sophie Riemersma and Jennifer Schulze anchor a solid veteran group and have made 178 combined appearances. Harper has played in 81 career matches and is poised to eclipse the 100-match mark in the last third of the season. They are joined by juniors Allyson Severance, Lindsay Taylor and Jacquelyn Krumnauer. Severance appeared in all 22 matches for the RedHawks last season. The sophomore class is comprised of Maggie McCrary, Abby Stratford and Taylor Nomanson. The trio played in a combined 45 matches last season with McCrary seeing action in all 22 matches. Also returning is sophomore Karolina Kugiel, a redshirt sophomore who sat out last season due to injury.Â
FRESH FACES: Miami boasts seven newcomers on its 2021 roster, who will look to make their impact in 2021. The talented group of newcomers, which comprise 41% of the Miami roster, are Caroline Cermack, Brooke Cirigliano, Lydia Harper, Brooke Jackson, Sylvia Koenig, Margo Lawson and Gracie Norris.
ECLIPSING 750 CAREER WINS: With a 3-0 win versus Buffalo on Jan. 22, 2021, Miami head coach Carolyn Condit posted her 750th career win. Condit owns a 762-565 career record entering her 42nd season as a head coach. Condit's 762 total victories are tied for eighth among active NCAA Division I coaches, and tied for 24th all-time. Owning more victories than any coach in the history of the Miami Athletic Department, Condit holds a 663-488 record and is in her 38th season in charge of the Red and White. Condit is the only volleyball coach in the history of the Mid-American Conference to win over 300 league matches, holding a conference mark of 366-216.
