MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Miami University volleyball team (7-1) took down tournament host Alabama State (1-8) in the ISTAP Collegiate Cup on Friday night in three sets.
Molly Creech led all players with 12 kills, while Lauren Coyne (11) and Chelsea Williams (10) followed closely behind. Rachel Morgan totaled the most digs (16), Raegan Lantz recorded the most blocks (four) and Grace Kreutz led both teams in service aces (four).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A Coyne kill and back-to-back service aces from Kreutz put Miami on top 3-0 in the first set. The Hornets answered by tying the match at 5-5 and eventually took an 11-8 lead. A collection of kills from Miami, three of which came from Williams and another Kreutz service ace, helped the RedHawks regain the lead at 15-14. The RedHawks continued to flash offensively, as Kreutz solo block and a Lantz service ace propelled Miami to a 23-18 advantage. A pair of kills from Williams and Coyne helped the RedHawks secure a 25-19 first-set win.
- Numerous errors from Alabama State and two kills from Creech pushed the RedHawks ahead 8-6 at the start of the second set. The Hornets responded by going on a 5-0 run, as they looked to take control of the set at 11-8. Miami remained in the fight thanks to a service ace from Holland Van Deusen and Morgan, as well as a number of kills from other RedHawks to lead 16-13. A Madison Brown service ace and a kill from Creech helped Miami separate from the Hornets at 21-14. Alabama State once again made it close, but the Red and White scored four of the final five points, which was highlighted by a Sophia Stallworth solo block, to take the second set 25-20.
- Creech sparked the RedHawks offense at the start of the third set, knocking down two kills and adding a solo block to propel the RedHawks to a 10-5 start. With the score at 12-8, the Red and White outscored the Hornets 10-1 to pull away 22-9. Multiple errors from Alabama State, another Creech solo block and Kreutz fourth service ace of the match fueled the RedHawks during that run. A kill from Lydia Michelin, a kill from Kreutz and a block from Coyne and Lantz sealed the third set 25-10.
