MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Miami University volleyball team (6-1) began its time in the ISTAP Collegiate Cup on Friday afternoon versus Nicholls (5-3) and defeated the Colonels in three sets.

Molly Creech led all players with 11 kills, and Lauren Coyne finished with the second most as she put down nine. Holland Van Deusen totaled the most assists (21) of the match, Grace Kreutz had the most digs (15), Raegan Lantz recorded the most blocks (four) and Rachel Morgan led both teams in service aces (three).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Coyne opened the contest with a pair of kills to give Miami a 2-0 advantage before Nicholls responded by knotting the score at two apiece. With the score tied at 4-4, the RedHawks scored six unanswered points to jump ahead 10-4. Miami did not stop there, as Lantz hit two kills and Chelsea Williams recorded a solo block and back-to-back kills to send Miami into the media timeout up 15-6. A service ace from Van Deusen made it 17-7, and Creech added two late kills to help the RedHawks end the first set with a 25-10 victory.
The Red and White carried the momentum from the first set into the opening of the second set, grabbing an early 9-4 lead thanks to numerous kills, a service ace from Madison Brown and a service ace from Creech. Two kills from Kendall Bosse kept the Colonels in check at 14-7 before the Red and Gray scored three straight to shrink the gap to 14-10. Winning 21-16, Williams had a kill, Van Deusen served her second ace and Coyne and Bosse combined for a block to put Miami in position to take the second set at 24-16. Williams ultimately closed out the set with a powerful kill that the Colonels were not able to dig to take the set 25-20.
Nicholls had no answers for the Red and White in the third set, as the RedHawks outscored the Colonels 16-1 to open the set. A flurry of kills from Miami led by Coyne and two service aces from Morgan got the offense going. Coyne and Lantz also combined for two blocks defensively during that stretch. A solo block from Lydia Michelin put the score at 20-5, and Morgan's third service ace of the set gave the RedHawks a 25-9 third-set win.

NOTES:

Miami had a .374 hitting percentage in comparison to .037 by Nicholls.
The RedHawks put down 40 kills and held the Colonels to 27.
The Red and White had seven blocks versus one from the Red and Gray.
Miami served eight aces, whereas Nicholls served just three.
The Red and White held a team under double-digits in a set for the third time this season (set three, 25-9).
Ria Furuta and Reesa Zimmerman each made their collegiate debuts.
