OXFORD, Ohio — Behind a solid offensive effort and a pair of good starts by Sam Bachman and Jonathan Brand, the Miami University baseball team (24-26; 17-17 Mid-American Conference) took both games of a Saturday doubleheader against the Akron Zips (14-35; 8-31 MAC) at home. The RedHawks took a first-inning lead in both games and never relinquished it to secure the doubleheader sweep.
In game one, the RedHawks won behind another dominant start from Bachman on the mound, while a potent bat from Nate Stone helped bring Miami ahead, 6-2. In game two, strong offense in the early innings was the key, which included three runs from Mac Hippenhammer that lifted Miami to a 9-2 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game one:
- Miami got the game off to a solid start in the first inning with Stone scoring off a home run to make it 1-0 early. Later in the third inning, Will Vogelgesang hit a triple over to right-center, allowing Brokemond and Nate Stolze to score a pair of runs in the RedHawks' favor.
- The third inning was a highlight of the opening game with Stone hitting a double to the left-center, scoring Vogelgesang, who was on third base after his triple. Cole Andrews finished the third for Miami with a sacrifice fly to the center, scoring Stone.
- Dalton Back drove in JJ Woolwine in the sixth inning, extending the Miami lead to 6-0. The Zips scored two in the seventh, but the Red and White held on to the lead to secure their first victory of the day.
Game two:
- Just like game one, the RedHawks were rolling early. Jacob Hensor reached first on a fielder's choice, allowing Vogelgesang to advance to second and scoring Brokemond. With Hensor on second, Cole Andrews singled to left field, and Hensor reached home plate to give Miami an early 2-0 lead.
- Brokemond singled to center field to kick off the second inning, scoring Billy Kopicki. After advancing to second on Brokemond's play, Mac Hippenhammer scored following Stone's sacrifice fly, increasing the Miami advantage to four.
- Hippenhammer continued to shine in the fourth, scoring Miami's first run in the fourth after Vogelgesang's sacrifice bunt. Brokemond scored shortly after, following Hensor's sacrifice bunt.
- The RedHawks weren't done in the sixth. Stone drove in Hippenhammer with an RBI single. Brian Zapp later came into pinch-run for Vogelgesang and scored after sacrifice fly by Hensor. Stone ended the inning with another run for Miami. The RedHawks held the Zips scoreless in the top of the seventh, ending the game with a 9-2 win.
