OXFORD, Ohio — Both teams did a chunk of their scoring in the second inning, but the Miami University baseball team came out on top, winning on a run from Benji Brokemond in the fifth inning. Redshirt senior Grant Hartwig pitched 7.0 dominant innings, striking out six batters to spur the RedHawks in a 3-2 victory at McKie Field. With the victory, the RedHawks improve to 22-27 overall and 15-17 in Mid-American Conference play, while the Zips fall to 15-33 overall and 8-29 in MAC action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Akron was the first team on the board, scoring two runs in the top of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. However, the RedHawks quickly responded to the Zips. Jacob Hensor doubled to left field and advanced to third on an error by the Akron center fielder. Cole Andrews was able to score on the play, making it 2-1. Brian Zapp used a bunt for a single, allowing Jacob Hensor to score, knotting the game at two.
- Brokemond started the bottom of the fifth with a bunt single. Andrews later singled out to the right field as Brokemond was on second, and he scored to put Miami ahead, 3-2. The RedHawk lead would stick for the remainder of the game, with Miami starting the series with the Zips with a victory.
MIAMI GAME NOTES:
- Andrews went 2-for-2 at the plate and also contributed one run and one RBI.
- Hartwig started on the mound for Miami and threw seven innings, striking out six while allowing just two runs. Webb came in and pitched two innings in relief, allowing no runs and striking out two.

The RedHawks will play a doubleheader against Akron on Saturday, May 22. The first pitch will be at 1 p.m. at McKie Field in Oxford. Each game is scheduled for seven innings.
