Baseball Captures Two Wins over NIU

OXFORD, Ohio —  The Miami University baseball team (13-8, 4-1 Mid-American Conference) continued their 2021 season with a doubleheader sweep over MAC foe Northern Illinois (4-14, 3-4 MAC). The RedHawks continued their late-game heroics with a pair of come-from-behind victories over the Huskies. In game one, redshirt freshman Nate Stone homered to left-center field, giving the RedHawks a 3-1 win in the 11th inning. In game two, the RedHawks came from behind once again, scoring twice in the bottom of sixth to take a 7-6 win. Junior Sam Bachman was electric in game one, striking out all nine batters he faced.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game One

  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, graduate student Will Vogelgesang tripled to deep center-field, scoring redshirt freshman Benji Brokemond.
  • In the bottom of the eleventh inning, Stone hit a walk-off homer to left-center field, driving in Dalton Back.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game Two

  • In the bottom of the third, senior Michael Morissette doubled deep to center field, driving in sophomore Billy Kopicki. Brokemond bunted his way on-base, and then stole second shortly after. Morissette crossed home plate on a wild pitch, pulling the RedHawks within two. Stone walked, then stole second base. An errant throw allowed Stone to advance to third and Brokemond to score, making it a 4-3 game.
  • Morissette started things out in the bottom of the fourth with a single. Brokemond then singled, putting runners on first and second. Back then singled up the middle, scoring Morissette from second. Stone then followed up with an RBI single up the middle, cutting the deficit to one, 6-5.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Kopicki reached on error. Morissette then singled, giving the RedHawks runners on both first and second. Brokemond then doubled to right, driving in Kopicki. The next at-bat, Stone grounded out to first, allowing Morissette to score giving the RedHawks a 7-6 lead and the win.
