RedHawks Split Weekend Series With No. 23/24 Tennessee

The Miami University softball team split a series with No. 23/24 Tennessee on Sunday afternoon. Miami dropped a 7-3 decision in game one and Courtney Vierstra pitched a complete-game shutout in game two as the RedHawks walked away with a 2-0 victory. The win was the first for head coach Kirin Kumar as the RedHawks are now 1-3 on the year. Tennessee falls to 5-1.

How it Happened (Game One):

Tennessee got on the board with a run in the first inning.
Miami answered off the bat of Adriana Barlow. The junior smashed a three-run homer to left-center as the RedHawks pulled ahead 3-1 after four innings of play.
The Volunteers scored six runs in the sixth and won the contest 7-3.

How it Happened (Game Two):

Vierstra was outstanding in game two of the double header. The senior threw a complete-game shutout, recording nine strikeouts and allowed just three hits and a walk.
Miami scored the first run of the twin bill when junior Maclai Branson singled to center to plate Karlee Juarez.
The RedHawks added an insurance run in the seventh when sophomore Kate Kobayashi came off the bench as a pinch hitter to record a homerun, the first of her career with the Red and White.

Up Next:
Miami plays five games next weekend. They open Friday, Feb. 26 in a double header with Georgia Tech. On Saturday, Feb. 27 they play Georgia and Georgia State and wrap up the weekend on Sunday, Feb. 28 with a single game against Kennessaw State.
