Falcons Get Past Miami In Final Period

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio— Bowling Green scored three times in the third period to come from behind and nip Miami 6-4 in the second game of a home-and-home series Saturday night. After Chase Gresock got the RedHawks off to a great start with two first-period goals (including one in the first minute), the Falcons erased a 3-1 deficit in the span of 17 seconds in the second period to swing the momentum in their home opener.

Miami (1-4-1) didn't trail until midway through the third period when Bowling Green grabbed a 5-4 lead, and the visitors were then unable to find an equalizer during a five-minute power play down the stretch. The Falcons (2-0-2) finished the scoring with an empty-net goal in the final 15 seconds of the game to account for the 6-4 margin.

Ludvig Persson made his fourth consecutive start for MU and stopped 21 shots. A night after notching his first college point, Red Savage was credited with two more assists Saturday to lead Miami. Thomas Daskas scored his first goal as a RedHawk, while Ryan Savage tallied his third goal of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • 0:35 1st (Miami 1-0) | Before many of the fans had even found their seats, Chase Gresock gave the RedHawks the lead with a breakaway goal off a Red Savage assist to open the scoring.
  • 6:02 1st (Bowling Green 1-1) | The Falcons responded with a goal on what would end up being their only power play attempt of the evening. After a Bowling Green shot hit the pipe, Miami was unable to clear the zone, leading to an Ethan Scardina goal with mere seconds remaining on the penalty kill. Brayden Krieger and T.J. Lloyd picked up assists on the play.
  • 9:49 1st (Miami 2-1) | Gresock knocked home his second goal of the night to put Miami back on top, beating Zack Rose with a shot that got behind the goalie and barely slid across the line.
  • 5:47 2nd (Miami 3-1) | Ryan Savage blistered a shot from near the blue line to extend MU's lead, with his brother Red Savage and captain Derek Daschke assisting.
  • 8:34 2nd (Bowling Green 3-2) | After Miami failed to score on a power play with a chance to break the game open, Max Coyle burst from the box as his two-minute penalty expired and accepted a pass from Ben Wozney in stride. Coyle's shot over Persson's left shoulder cut the RedHawks' lead in half.
  • 8:51 2nd (Bowling Green 3-3) | The Falcons only needed 17 more seconds to find the back of the net again, with Nathan Burke doing the honors off passes from Austen Swankler and Anton Malmstrom.
  • 10:59 2nd (Miami 4-3) | Thomas Daskas scored the Redhawks' first power play goal in their last 16 attempts, lighting the lamp with only one second remaining on the advantage. Joe Cassetti and Jack Clement had the assists.
  • 0:35 3rd (Bowling Green 4-4) | BGSU wasted no time leveling the score in the third period, as Taylor Schneider poked home a rebound on the back side to tie the game at 4.
  • 9:38 3rd (Bowling Green 5-4) | Austen Swankler's second goal of the weekend proved to be the game-winner. After Miami came up empty on a scoring opportunity, the Falcons went end-to-end, with Nathan Burke's wraparound finding Coale Norris in front. Swankler was in perfect position to bat in the rebound on the other side of Persson for BGSU's first lead.
  • 19:45.2 3rd (Bowling Green 6-4) | After Bowling Green's five-minute major penalty expired with 2:30 to play, the RedHawks played without a goalie for most of the remaining time in an attempt to find a fifth goal. The home team capitalized with 14.8 seconds left in the period on Taylor Schneider's pass ahead to Norris for an empty-netter.

GAME NOTES:
  • With their assists tonight, Cassetti and Daschke now share the season team lead for points with five each.

  • For the second night in a row, Miami enjoyed a decided advantage in the faceoff circle, winning 40 of 69 draws (MU controlled 41 of 64 faceoffs Friday in Oxford).
